Summary
There’s a river. Again and again and again, always he comes back to the river.
He stumbles down to the banks, knees aching, legs trembling and unsteady like a newborn fawn. He can taste blood in his mouth, coppery and sharp. Can feel it on his hands, drying in sticky rivulets down his arms and nestling in the crooks of his palms.
His feet slip unevenly along muddy banks and he trips over a rock hidden in the murky waters and suddenly he’s kneeling in the current, his stinging hands numbed by the cool current. -

Summary
The fire in the hearth burns low, the smoke dark and breathless, spilling into the room. It makes him think of blood, of the sickening choke of sacrificial flames.
There is an ancient, vile anger within him, spreading slow like cracks under the ice, further and further, deeper and deeper, until he plunges into the freezing water.
He takes a deep, unsteady breath, paces from one side of the room, then to the other, aimless wandering circles, as the cold stone walls seem to draw closer, wrap around him like a tomb.
He thinks of his brother’s slack face. He thinks of his mother’s horror. He thinks of the sick satisfaction that curls through his chest when he draws blood.
He thinks of the stranger. His dark hair. The sting of his teeth, the dull ache of his punches, that settled warm between his ribs.
The halls are empty, warmth still lingering in the echoes of life that colour the palace. A stark contrast to the untamed wilderness he had made his home before. A shawl left on a bench, a basket of fibres by the window, a last sputtering torch. Like ghosts of home, that dog his every step as he walks the tightening circles inwards, to the very heart of the palace.
