He sloppily punched in the combo for his locker and tore it open, deciding he may as well go about his day like a normal person (for once) and get to class on time, when a badly folded paper floated into his face. He sputtered, cursing whoever had the audacity to prank him, when he read the message it contained. In the note, sprawled in messy handwriting suggesting panic and urgency, lay an only slightly creepy message:
“Save yourself while you still can.”

Summary
Dallas Winston sat on a hill overlooking the city, loosely gripping his knees, which sat about halfway up to his chest. Hanya Yanagihara’s A Little Life lay sprawled out next to him, open to a random page after he’d tossed it aside. The sun had set long before he’d finished, revealing naught but the starless night he now stared at, but he’d plowed through the 830-page brick of a book in the dark, hoping, hoping against hope, simply hoping that it would make him feel something. They’d said it would; Soda spent almost three days sobbing, and Steve couldn’t even think straight for twenty-four hours after he’d finished it, but Dally had yet to shed a tear. Why couldn’t he feel? Joy, sadness, anger, anything was an open relief to the (emotionless) mounting hunk of lead building in his stomach. Was he a sociopath? A psychopath? Those seemed like the only plausible answers he could think of.

Summary
The wind howls and groans, soaring through the trees. Leaves twirl down, and bushes shuffle to tunes only they could hear, like old dance partners. Rain barrages down onto my roof, and I worry the shingles would tumble out as I lay splayed across my bathroom floor, my latest piece of artwork hastily scribbled across my torso and down my thighs. Darry would skin me alive if he found me like this. He’d always been a mother hen, fussing over even a torn knee.
I may have gone a bit overboard, this time.

“What do you mean, they’re gone?”
“We can’t—we haven’t been able to locate the lieutenants, sir. Search and rescue is going to make another pass but we have been unable to find them,” the sailor tried to explain.
“They—what about the dye or their beacons? They were barely 300 yards off the shore when they went in,” Viper argued.
“The beacons appear to have malfunctioned, or, at least, three of them have. The one beacon never activated at all.”
“And the dye?” Jester persevered.
“At this point, it’s been hours, sir. The dye will be present but so diluted and dispersed it won’t be a very accurate location tool, especially as the sun starts getting lower in the sky.”
The two Top Gun instructors exchanged dark looks before turning back to the serviceman in front of them.
