Right before brushing her teeth, Zoey remembers the tonic pouch still sitting in her fanny pack. She toys with it, unsure, before finally making up her mind.
Tomorrow would be their last day of rehearsal before the Idol Awards, the most intense. She could use the boost.
She uncaps it, down the (surprisingly sweet) content in three big gulps, and dumps the empty pouch in her bathroom trashcan.
Ready for tomorrow!
As always, she spares a few minutes to doomscroll before finally wrapping herself in the blanket for the night.
A cosy warmth envelops her body and she fall asleep, surprisingly serene.

Mira is trying hard not to panic, so she doesn't notice what has Rumi turning to the bunched covers of Zoey's bed.
Rumi pulls the blanket off and… inexplicably, the world feels both stranger and right again.
A weird relief washes upon her, but the confusion remains, cristalized in one very simple question. "Why is there a turtle in Zoey's bed?"

Summary
Y'kahel never planned for a life without the Scions.
Whenever she imagined some foe or cowardly plot managing to disband their merry band of elite fighters, she always assumed it would claim her life in the process. Failing that, she figured she would be hunting, fighting or getting revenge one way or another for her lost family. Whoever or whatever was responsible would be her sole focus and after that, well... she never really planned that far.
She never planned for the Scions to disband willingly.

After a rabies exposure, the virus must travel to the brain before it can cause symptoms. Therefore, the incubation period may last for weeks to months depending on several factors such as location of the exposure site (in relation to the brain) and age; in extremely rare cases it could be dormant for years.
Rumi thinks about this one frequently, lying in bed at night; the idea that you could be wasting away at any moment in your life. A poison in your veins with you none the wiser– like a ticking bomb just waiting to go off.
You would need to get bit or scratched first, of course, and if you took the right precautions you would likely never know. And Rumi has never been bitten anyway. She’s fine.

Two unfamiliar players stood across the net. The taller one was hard to miss. She was taller than the rest of the team, lean and muscular, with a high ponytail of pink hair that somehow looked more dangerous than cute. The girl beside her was shorter, but no less intense. Her hair was braided tightly down her back, and her jersey clung to the kind of arms that made Zoey do a double take.
She smiled and gave a casual wave, trying to be charming. A simple, friendly hello.
They didn’t wave back.
They didn’t do anything, actually, just looked at her. Then a coach called them over, and they turned away without a word.
Zoey blinked, her hand still mid wave. Rude.

She took an unsteady breath and started again.
Rumi has lived with rules all her life, rules that only apply to her and don't make sense to anyone else, so it isn't weird that she keeps developing more.
