Summary

Shane understood that. After all, he’d felt the same way.
Ilya gently nudged him with his elbow. "Now you. Why are you here, Canadian boy?”
The corner of Shane’s lip raised, and he shrugged. “I wanted to be more than hockey. At least, for a little while longer.”
Ilya’s eyes locked on him, and a small smile reset the lines of Ilya’s face. “You couldn’t have done that in Canada?”
Shane shrugged again. “Sure, but Canada didn’t have you.”
Ilya looked down at the ground, and didn’t look back up as he spoke.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander have been preparing for the Hunger Games their entire lives as citizens of Districts One and Two. Summary
When the Hollander family trip to Moscow comes to an end, 8-year-old Shane swears he's never going to see Ilya again. He parts from his summer friend with a heavy heart and the certainty that that's the end of their budding friendship.
Over a decade later, Ilya walks into his life again, all grown and handsome; his thick accent is a hint, but what gives his identity away is the bracelet tied around his wrist. There should be no reason for Ilya to be in Montreal, and yet here he is.
Shane takes a deep breath and reintroduces himself, completely unaware of the whirlwind Ilya is about to take him in.

Ilya stared at her for a long moment. Yuna studied his face to try and figure out if he understood her, but this almost six year old already knew how to hide his emotions on his face better than most adults she knew.
“Okey,” Ilya said and then he turned to face away from her.
Yuna decided that was enough for today. Shane returned and Yuna watched as Ilya’s mask broke when he saw Shane. Ilya was smiling at Shane like he was the only star in Ilya’s sky.

Ilya and Shane meet on the first day of kindergarden. Yuna feels motherly towards her son's new friend.
