It wasn’t very often that Wade couldn’t find the words that fit a situation. There weren’t many sentences that he couldn’t turn into a joke, a pun, an innuendo, something to lighten the mood, to earn laughter or groans from whoever was unfortunate enough to be in the same room as him. The one thing Wade prided himself on above anything else, no matter how many people told him to shut up, was his motormouth.

Of all the people from Logan’s old life who could have run into him, this was the only one that Logan wouldn’t immediately drop everything and run from. Wade fucking Wilson. Of all the guys he’d worked with, him and Wade had a special bond. It was the kind of bond that rumors flew around camp about, and that they denied, if only to not have to be separated from one another. This guy was the one who had kept him company in those terrible years with Special Forces, being made to do things he could never forget and certainly would never be forgiven for.

As he moved further into the aisle, trying to find exactly what he needed without getting into hurricane soccer mom’s path, he saw something. Something that made him freeze.
A familiar profile, someone he hadn’t seen in twelve long years, but that he could never forget, not really. It was hard to forget a face you saw almost every single day for three years, a face you spent hours admiring, memorizing each and every detail because you never knew when it would be the last time you saw it. The man wore a leather jacket and jeans in place of the camo green t-shirt or white tank top he’d always favored during their endless days out in the steaming sun. He looked older, his hair and mutton chops starting to gray, especially at the ends, and there were lines around his eyes that Wade knew hadn’t been there over a decade ago, but there was no denying that he was staring at James Logan Howlett.

Steve had never been kissed before by anyone other than his ma and Mrs. Barnes, but he couldn’t imagine any kiss being better than the one he just had. He was still clinging to Bucky for dear life, even as he caught his breath, Bucky’s hand still on his cheek, the other tracing the notches in Steve’s spine.

Several times, his coworkers had asked what his husband did for work. Bucky hadn’t been able to tell them because he didn’t know himself. Not all of it, anyway. Just his title and its dangers, and he couldn’t even share that.
“I can’t do it anymore, Steve. I can’t watch you leave and then wait hoping that you come home.”
Steve’s face had gone even paler and his grip on Bucky’s hand was vice-like. “What are you saying?”
Bucky’s heart pounded a violent tattoo beneath his chest. He knew what he needed to say, but he didn’t know if he’d be able to. There was a reason he hadn’t before. But he thought of Steve laying in hospital beds, tubes and wires attached to him and machines blinking. He’d seen the rhythm of Steve’s heart so many times he could picture it when he heard it.
“Captain America or me, Steve. You can’t have both. Not anymore.”

A story that shares the heart wrenching story of Steve and Bucky's relationship, focusing on how they grow as individual people while separated. It's beautiful, it's sad, and it's an absolutely incredible character study. All too often ship stories focus only on the characters in relation to their dynamic with each other, how they exist in their relationship, but this story turns that completely on its head, focusing instead on who they are as individuals and how they grow into people that can exist alone yet still have a deep, meaningful love for each other. I hesitate to call this one a "love story", as those are usually about romantic love between partners, but in this one, it's not about their love for each other, it's not about their relationship, or even about how they find their way back to each other. It's about Steve and Bucky as human beings first and foremost, with lives, events, and meaning beyond their relationship to each other. It's a character study, and one of the most beautiful, well done character studies I've ever read. There are not enough Kudos in the world for this story

Bucky tapped him on the shoulder, swaying back and forth a little as he waited for the man to turn around. “Hello,” he said, and then promptly forgot what else he was going to say, because this guy was fucking beautiful. “Wow. Good face.”
Two of the guy’s friends, a man wearing a suit that fit so well it had to be bespoke and a man with a cute little gap between his front teeth, started cracking up. The petite redhead sitting next to them cocked her head to the side and pulled her phone out of her handbag. Beautiful Face just looked kind of pained, so Bucky redirected. He was a gentleman. He could take a hint. No hitting on beautiful guys who were uncomfortable with that sort of thing, no matter how lickable their jawlines were.
“Hello,” he repeated, doing his best to mind his manners. “I’m very sorry to bother you. Can I have a piggy-back ride?”

Summary
Coulson, for his part, stares up at Bucky with such a betrayed look of frozen horror that Natasha actually goes the extra step and presses another button, capturing the moment and airdropping the photograph to her phone for posterity. When he speaks, his voice comes out as a hoarse whisper. “Why…?” He swallows and starts again, trying for some semblance of normality. “...Why would you tweet something like that?!”
“If you must know, sir,” and somehow he manages to make ‘sir’ come out with the same inflection most people reserve for ‘motherfucking son of a bitch’, “it’s because I have a difficult time doing my job when my job involves monitoring the man with the best fucking ass in the United States of America.” He slowly lowers himself back into his seat until he’s at eye level, making extreme eye contact with Coulson until Coulson turns away to make mortified eye contact in Natasha’s general direction through the one-way glass. Natasha would take another picture, if she weren’t too busy catching Steve’s red-faced sputtering. “Sometimes, I vent to my Twitter followers. Sometimes, it’s about hot men with washboard abs. Can I go now, or do you need a graphic description of how I pleasure myself at night?”
