Summary
It wasn’t Langdon’s first time sleeping on the couch, and the way his marriage was going, it wouldn’t be the last. They’d had the same fight they always had, and it’d gone the same way as it had every time before. He came home late, Abby was frustrated he’d missed dinner, he’d told her someone was dying, she said someone was always dying, and he ended up on the couch.
—Or—
Abby makes him sleep on the couch, so he jerks off thinking about Mel. -

Summary
“Oh,” He said, as they got to his car, “I forgot my bag at PT the other day. D’you mind if I stopped in to grab it ?” He was leaning over the open car door, watching her.
“That’s fine,” She nodded, ducking into the passenger side. She had a sneaking suspicion this was a trap, a way to coerce her into meeting his physical therapist, so she might consider actually going to one herself.
“You’re sure ?” He asked, closing the driver's side door behind him, starting his car. She nodded, humming an affirmative as she put her seatbelt on. When they pulled into the parking lot, he was going to tell her she should come in with him, say hi. She knew it.
True to form, Langdon pulled in, parked outside the little red brick building, and, casual as could be,
“You should come in, meet Dr. Alvarez, he’s great.” It was like the thought had only just occurred to him. Maybe she was wrong, and this wasn’t a fully thought out, calculated attempt at getting her to take care of herself, but it sure felt like it. -

“Just let me know,” He said, hands in the pockets of his pants, “When you sneak out of here. I’ll leave whenever you do.” He said, eyes scanning the sky above them. She liked when he avoided her eyes, he’d always been good at picking up what things overstimulated her, and very rarely added to the list of things that contributed. She liked looking at him, when he wasn’t looking at her. The way his blue eyes reflected the street lights, as they swept across the sky. She wasn’t sure what he was looking for, out there, she certainly didn’t see any stars. Either way, his eyes moved across the sky and his eyelashes were long and dark and he was so handsome. He looked dashing, in his suit, his hair pushed out of his face, he was beautiful, even without her glasses. He was blurred and hazy in the yellow streetlight, and he was beautiful. In an instant, his eyes found hers, and she looked away. She’d been ogling him, practically drooling. She felt her cheeks warm up, pinker than even the makeup she’d applied.

Summary
“Langdon.” She said, as he drove. It’d be easier if he couldn’t look at her.
“Mel.” He replied, shooting her a quick sideways glance.
“Earlier today,” She began, “in the break room,” her hands fidgeted nervously in her lap, “you said something about, uh, well-“
“Needing to get laid ?” He finished for her,
“Yes. I was thinking about it,” Her stomach was quickly filling up with rocks and her throat burned just slightly,
“About me getting laid ?” He joked, smirking at her, eyes still on the road. The beat of silence that followed made him look at her fully, for just a moment, before turning his eyes back to the car in front of him. “What were you thinking about ?” He asked, tone more serious.
“I’m… going to tell you something you can’t tell anyone else, okay ?” Her eyes were burning a hole into her shoes, and she noticed the small speck of red that adorned the right one’s toe. The smallest drop of blood staining their surface.

Summary
Eventually, one woman, all the way at the end of the bar, did catch his eye. Long blond hair falling loose over her shoulders, a single point of stillness in the otherwise frantic scene. He put his drink down, wiping his palms on his jeans, grabbing his drink again. His palms were immediately wet again, the condescension on the glass. Better than sweat, at least. He made his way over. He leaned against the bar near her, gathering his courage to speak. He hated feeling nervous.
“Uh,” He started. Not his best work, “Hey.” He said. This wasn’t going to go well. She turned around, trying to discern if he was talking to her or not, and his heart nearly jumped out of his chest, it was trying to climb up his throat and out of his mouth, which made speaking hard.
“Dr. Langdon ?” Mel said, smiling widely.
“Uh,” He said, sweating.

Summary
Before she could speak, Dana was sending him off to whatever patient was in Central 10, and looking at her from under her glasses. Mel turned, placing her hands on the nurses station in front of her, awaiting orders.
“Where’re you two going ?” She asked, instead.
“New York !” Mel chirped, “For the Renfaire,”
“You’re staying the weekend together ?” Dana asked. Mel nodded. “That’s sweet.” She said. There was something in Dana’s tone of voice, Mel wasn’t sure exactly what she was implying, but there were implications.

Langdon books an Airbnb to spend the weekend with Mel in New York for the renfaire. -

Summary
“Hey,” He said, throat dry and voice quiet. She didn’t respond. If he were smarter, or cared less about his marriage, he might take the silence and run, go hide in their bedroom where she couldn’t yell at him, because the noise might wake the kids, “How was bedtime,” He asked, sitting beside her. She stood.
“You missed it.” She said, hands on her hips.
“I know.” He said. There was no defense to be made. He missed it.

Langdon gets home late on the fourth of July. He was supposed to spend the day with his family. This is entirely a conversation between Langdon and Abby, and he briefly thinks about Mel. Maybe that plays a slight role in their decision. -

Summary
“Are you okay ?” He asked, his hand moving as if he had wanted to reach over, take her hand, but stopping like he’d thought better of it. She nodded without speaking. “Mel.” He said. Just her name, quietly, so just the two of them could hear. He was trying to check in with her. Even he could tell this was out of character.
“I’m okay. It was a bad day at work,” She said, hoping he’d drop it.
“I’m sorry about that.” He said. She wasn’t sure if he meant he was sorry about his role in her having a bad day, or in a more general way
“There were… many reasons today was not good.” She folded her hands tightly in her lap as she spoke, “But I’m fine.” She was going to do this. She’d said she would, and she was going to. She was nervous about it, but pushing outside her comfort zone every once in a while was good, right ? If Becca could do it, so could Mel.
“You know you don’t have to-“ He started to say, before Mel interrupted.
“I’m fine.” She said, definitive.

Summary
She tried to steady her breathing, to calm her racing heart, but her blood was boiling, bubbling under her skin, angry and fast. She was sweating, and the sweat dripping off her forehead itched, and her clothes felt too tight and the fireworks kept booming and she couldn’t calm down. Everything was moving without her, her heart pounding without permission, the sweat running down her temple, her whole body rocking, back and forth, without meaning to. Fireworks boomed and the bugs chirped and Becca was watching fireworks somewhere without her. Laughing with her boyfriend, talking to his parents, Mel didn’t even get an invite.
—
Mel has a breakdown and then they watch the fireworks together. -

Summary
“I’m sorry,” He said. She doesn’t think she’s ever rolled her eyes so hard, and she crossed her arms defensively across her chest. She wanted him to go away. “The way Robby spoke to you was wrong.”
“That’s not-“ She started, but he just kept speaking. She hated when he spoke over her.
“And so was the way I spoke to you last year,” He took one step closer to her, and she took two steps back. He could apologize all he wanted, he wasn’t touching her. He wasn’t allowed.

Summary
She took a deep breath. Her lip quivered. She wanted to disappear, vanish in a poof of smoke, she imagined it, like a squid releasing ink when provoked. Poof. Black smoke. Mel’s gone. “Do you think…” Mel started, unsure how to phrase her concern out loud. “You would tell me if you thought something bad was happening. Based on what she told you.” She said. She knew that to be true, Langdon wouldn’t keep something from her if he thought Becca might be in danger. She knew that.
“If I thought something was fishy, I would’ve told you.” He agreed.

Summary
When he’d told her about the drugs, he hoped it would break the camel's back. Instead, she bucked up and stood by him and been his rock. She was his partner, his best friend, through it all. But she hadn’t felt like his wife. He couldn’t do it now, though. It would humiliate her. Her parents would never forgive him, and she’d hate to explain it to them. He was stuck. There were worse women to be stuck with. He could be happy with her, except…
He was in love with Mel. A quiet admittance he would never say out loud. He thought about what his life might be, had Santos never caught on to his habits. He wants to think he’d have sought help on his own, but that wasn’t true. Had Santos not turned him in, he’d still be using. But, he liked to imagine. He liked to imagine a world where he’d never used at all, maybe, where he’d been brave enough to leave Abby, where he’d met Mel as a recently divorced young man, not a married drug addict. -

Summary
“Frank.” Abby said again, standing besides him at the stove.
“Abby.” He said, a slightly desperate edge to his voice. Mel had already confirmed nothing was happening between them, and he didn’t really want to discuss that with Abby, of all people. Whatever feeling was drawing him to Mel, that had possessed him to offer a drive from the hospital to Becca’s and back to her place in this snow, he didn’t want to discuss it. Not when Mel was sitting criss cross in his living room, damp hair loose around her shoulders, wearing his clothes, playing with his kids. Whatever he was feeling, it didn’t matter. They were friends. He wasn’t going to let his stupid feelings get in the way of that.

Frank offers Mel a ride home, but the snow makes the drive too risky, and they go to his place instead. And then Abby shows up, too. -

Summary
“Then you guys came in and he took off.” She nodded, folding her hands tightly in her lap, indicating that she was done talking.
“How’s your head, by the way,” Officer Freeman asked, when she’d finished writing.
“Dr. Langdon checked me out.” She said. He’d sat quietly next to her, listening intently. He sat a little straighter when she mentioned his name.
“She’ll be okay, long term. One hell of a goose egg, though. And I’ll be monitoring her for any signs of an incoming migraine. Light sensitivity, nausea, that sort of thing.” He said. She looked up at the ceiling, counting the tiles. She was ready for this conversation to be over. She hoped they wouldn’t mention going to court again, “Look at her. Rolling her eyes at me. Doctors are the worst patients.” He continued.
“I’m not rolling my eyes-“ She began to protest, before catching the smile on his face. He was teasing her. Ok. Now she did feel like rolling her eyes. They asked her more questions, about his injury, her treatment of it, the severity of it. Unfortunately he probably wouldn’t need to seek medical attention elsewhere. Eventually, they stopped asking questions, closed their notebooks and stood.

Summary
So, Mel hit her head. Kind of hard, actually. But she was fine. Okay ! Great, even. It throbbed where her skull made contact with the ground, and her tailbone sort of ached, but those were just bruises, she was sure. She wasn’t going to reject it, though, when Dr. Langdon pulled her into a room to conduct a thorough check. It was nice to be looked after. She was so rarely on the receiving end of care. He held the door open, turning the lights off as he entered behind her, shutting the door.

Summary
He groaned. She wasn’t sure what he was thinking. She knew how odd it was, that she was asking a lot. As long as she’d known him, Daryl hadn’t really shown interest in anyone. It was part of the appeal of him, for this particular task. Maybe he wasn’t interested in sex, neither was she ! It worked out well for the both of them. And even as uninterested in it as he may be, surely he’d still appreciate the end result. He was a means to an ends, a safe, trusted person, someone she could share intimacy and closeness with, without necessarily making any long term commitments, or giving him the wrong idea. It truly was just to get it over with.
“You’re sure you wanna do that ?” He asked. She nodded, enthusiastically.
“I’m sure. I wanna make a choice, I wanna choose. I’m choosing. I’ve already chosen.” She told him.
“Just. Think about it. If you still wanna in three days, maybe. Maybe come find me again.” He said, swallowing hard.(Beth decides that in a world where bad men take whatever they want, she’s gonna make sure losing her virginity goes well. With someone she likes. Someone she trusts. Who better than Daryl ?)

Summary
Daryl grunted, nodded his head towards something, a gap torn down in the fence. The same scuffling, haphazard footsteps.
“Did a walker do that ?” She whispered. There was only one set of footprints that she could discern, but one wasn’t usually enough to get through a fence.
“Looks like it, doesn’t look overrun, though. Should check it out.” He replied, gravelly voice so low she could barely make out the words. She nodded at him, and he pulled back the chain link, letting her duck under his arm ahead of him. She leaned on the post holding the fence up, and waited for Daryl to push through the small gap that she had. It was more difficult for him, not that he was much larger than her, really, but his crossbow getting caught complicated it for him slightly. Once on the other side, he stood at the ready, and she took out her knife. He walked slowly ahead of her, making sure she didn’t fall behind as she hobbled after him.(Daryl and Beth don’t find a funeral home, instead, they head in the opposite direction. There they find a cabin in the woods, no car with a white cross finds them, instead, they get some god damn peace and quiet. Then they have to decide wether or not to leave.)

Summary
Beth Greene was gone. Just as quickly, so was Dawn. Two bodies on the floor. Red blood pooling and staining the shiny white floors. Except Beth wasn’t a body. Not yet. A bullet entered skull, and exited it too, but her brain was missed. Gloriously, miraculously missed. The doctor said it hit her suborbital margin, the part of the skull where her eyebrow rested. Grazed her parietal lobe, the part of her brain that controls her senses, her spatial awareness. When she wakes up, if she wakes up, she’d have a long road to walk before she was fully healed. If such a thing was possible. Daryl said it would be. Not that Beth could hear him.
or.
Beth gets exceptionally lucky, and walks away from Grady Memorial with nothing more than an eye patch to show for it. She’s determined to live, now. Not just get by with Daryl or Rick or Maggie’s help. She wants to be someone who keeps herself alive. Half blind and Brain damaged, she’ll have to recover first. Luckily, Daryl Dixons there to help her out. She has no idea where they stand, but she knows he won’t leave her side.
