"About last night..." Mike began, his voice hesitant.
Harvey glanced at him, his expression unreadable. "What about it?"
Mike fidgeted, his gaze dropping to the counter. "The kiss. That was—it was a mistake."
Harvey’s hand stilled on the machine, and for a fraction of a second, something flickered across his face. Mike couldn’t tell what because it was gone as quickly as it came, replaced by Harvey’s usual mask.

"Transparent, and I’d add shameless," Alfred said, his British accent laced with fond exasperation. He set his cup down with a soft clink. "Do I even have a choice in the matter, or am I at the mercy of one of your whims?"
Thomas shifted forward, a sparkle in his eye. "Alfie, when have we ever given you the illusion of choice?"

Martha glanced down, her hand brushing the strand. "Do you think so?"
"I do," Alfred said, his tone softer now. "As well I should. I was the one who suggested them to Dr. Wayne as the gift, after all."

The way he spoke brought Alfred to an abrupt halt, his heart kicking up in his chest. A flicker of hope danced somewhere inside him, irrational and reckless, but then he heard another voice.

"Master Bruce," Alfred began, far too calmly, "what exactly were you doing when the oven started making poultry-related noises?"
Bruce scratched the back of his neck. "Well, I was trying to follow this old recipe I found in the library. You know, the one in that creepy book with the weird cover? I thought maybe I could try something more... rustic."
"The one with the pentagram embossed on the spine?"
Bruce’s eyes darted to the side. "I think so?"

Alfred, feeling an odd mix of indignation and confusion, let out a derisive snort. "I am always in control. You’ve just never stuck around long enough to notice."
James winced at that, and Alfred immediately regretted the words. But he couldn’t stop himself. He let out a shaky breath, suddenly aware of how tired he was. Of everything.
"You left," Alfred said, the words spilling out before he could stop them. "You walked away, without a word, and now you’re back, and I’m supposed to... what? Just act like it doesn’t bother me? Like I’m not still..." He trailed off, realizing he had said too much.
James didn’t say anything for a moment, watching Alfred carefully. Then, with a sigh, he stepped closer. "I’m sorry, Alfred. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again—I shouldn’t have left like that. I should’ve... I should’ve fought for us."
Alfred’s heart did a weird little flip, but he ignored it. "Well, you didn’t. And now it’s too late."
"Is it?" James asked quietly, "Because I don’t think it is."
