The first letter arrived early in the afternoon.
Amanda had not expected it.
She had hoped, perhaps, in the quiet and private way she had learned to hope for things where Spock was concerned—carefully, without pressure, the way one hopes for rain in a dry season without demanding it of the sky—but she had not expected it.
Sarek had said nothing on the shuttle home from the Enterprise, and she had said nothing either, because there are certain things a mother understands about her children that do not require discussion with anyone, including their fathers.
So when the message came through, flagged with a Starfleet routing code and addressed in the precise, unornamented way Spock had of writing her name—Amanda Grayson, no flourish, no endearment, as though she were a colleague and not the woman who had read him Tennyson until he fell asleep—she set down her tea and sat with it for a moment before she opened it.

Ten seconds.
Harvey had timed it because he was a man who noticed detail, and it was a detail, that his brand-new, not-actually-legally-employed-by-the-firm associate could locate a random deposition faster than Donna could locate her own coffee.
"Here," Mike said, skidding back in, slightly breathless, holding the file out like an offering. There was something almost hopeful in his face. Like he was waiting for a gold star.
"Good," Harvey said, and took it without looking up from his monitor.
Mike didn't leave.
Harvey glanced up. "Something else?"
"No, no, that's—that's it. Cool." But he was smiling, this dumb, pleased, crooked smile, and he lingered another beat before wandering off toward his desk like a man who'd just been told he was a very good boy.
Harvey frowned at the closed door for a solid three seconds after Mike had gone.

Mike stood in front of the mirror, shirt half-done, frowning like the fabric had personally insulted him. It wasn’t that it didn’t fit—it did, technically—but there was a tightness to it that hadn’t been there before. A whisper of resistance right where his stomach curved, soft and new. He tried sucking in a little, fastening it again, and it worked, sure, but the line of the fabric wasn’t lying. The man staring back at him wasn’t quite the same sleek, wiry version of himself that had started working under Harvey Specter.
