On the ancient, rusted-out wreck of the small spacecraft below the dune, several desiccated corpses had been strung up by their ankles—probably by the Bad Lads or some other local gang—and were being picked at by an assortment of Worms and buzzards. Next to them, however, were two men who were still very much alive, tied up back-to-back and dangling upside down, slowly turning in circles as the pair wriggled and squirmed in their bonds.
They weren’t trying to escape, though. They appeared to be much more focused on trying—and failing—to punch each other’s lights out.
“I’m not buying it,” Meryl muttered.
Roberto scoffed. “They sure act like a pair of brothers. Look like it, too.”

In their shared motel room, Wolfwood finds himself caught up with the man’s wellbeing, which is going downhill quickly. It comes to a head with a sudden eruption of odd fleshy wings from his back and a deal to keep things quiet for a while.
