Summary
Bucky wasn’t in love with his best friend. He wasn’t! It was wrong and selfish — utterly impossible, if not even bordering on ridiculous. Why would he be in love with his best friend? Pfft, that sort of thing didn’t happen, right?
Bucky struggles with his more than friendly feelings for Steve and it leads to him growing distant, leaving Steve in the dark about what is actually going on.

“Your son was said to be as beautiful as Brooklyn’s sweet apple blossoms,” Barnes said, and his lips lifted in another smile, then his eyes moved and Steve was startled by the intensity of his gaze.
Barnes gave pause, long enough that Steve’s heartbeat picked up again. Then he spoke again.
“But no blossom could compare,” he said. “Not even the most perfect of untouched flowers.”
Steve felt his cheeks heat up; he blushed right to the roots of his hair, pulled back from his face by Wanda’s best braids. Barnes’s gaze somehow intensified even more as his gaze just shifted enough that Steve was sure he saw him blush that far. Barnes’s lip lifted at one corner by a hair.
“I’ve never been gladder to have my expectations so far exceeded,” he concluded.

Steve's life has been hard from the beginning. His father left when his ma was still pregnant. He's bound to turn out an Omega, which means he's got a life full of creeps wanting to try it with a male Omega and birth control that's not designed for boys but given to them anyway ahead of him. His mother works constantly to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table, the looming recession making everything more expensive than it needs to be. The only good thing is his best friend, who genuinely likes him, who might even love him, but even that gets taken away from him...
But just because the Army took Bucky away, doesn't mean they have to give up. If they try, they can make it. Steve knows that high school romances are usually doomed, but something gives him a good feeling about this one. He knows he doesn't want to lose it.Series

Meet. Date. Fall in love. Get married, buy a house, get a dog/cat/bird/ect, discuss children either because you want to have them or you’re going to have them (whoops), have said children. Watch said children grow up and go to college and make some of the dumb mistakes you once made. Get some grandkids along the way. Grow old together and romantically die in your sleep on the same night. But, the most important thing is this: Meet, date, fall in love, then have kids.

107th “NO WIDOWS” INFANTRY RETURNS HOME
“The USS Gregory dropped anchor in New York City’s harbor this morning, bringing home the men of the 107th Infantry. The 107th was reported in May of 1943 to have been cut in half by the Battle of the Azzano, with estimates of over 400 soldiers dead or missing, only to miraculously reappear a year later lead by then Mst. Sergeant James Barnes. Later promoted to Captain, Barnes single-handedly arranged the escape of all 400 captured men and the destruction of the last Nazi splinter-cell known as Hydra. Captain Barnes lead his men out of German territory as they chanted NO WIDOWS TONIGHT and today, Captain Barnes lead his men home…

The only good thing is his best friend, who genuinely likes him, who might even love him, but even that gets taken away from him before he has a chance to actually grow up and explore it.
So, he's old for his young years. He's practical. He understands that sometimes you've got to take what you can get and if there are mishaps, then deal with them. He deals with it. Life doesn't give him lemons, it rains lemon juice when he's scraped his knees. He deals with it. He moves through life with anger and hatred. He hates pity. He hates that nothing is fair. He hates July. He hates that he's a liar. He hates the army that took Bucky from him.
He hates the colonel on his doorstep, looking at him and Bucky's son with pity, telling him Bucky is missing in action, presumed dead.Series
