Summary
It’s something she's seen in stained glass and religious texts, in passages of honor and scriptures of heroics. A knight kneeling before his sovereign, loyalty burning in his eyes and chest swollen with pride for his superior; it’s the image of Dimitri now, an image she subconsciously burns into her mind to be reviewed for the rest of her days. He is the noble prince of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and yet he kneels before her as though he is nothing, as though he is just one of millions of men who could have sworn themselves to her, and it’s the humility of this vulnerable notion that makes Byleth forget, for a moment, the sorrow of her loss.

Summary
“Don’t come any closer,” Byleth rasped, her voice low and guttural like the undertone of a roar. Dimitri paused at the sound, something in her voice making his skin prickle, though whether it was in anticipation or fear he could not be certain.
“Beloved?” The magic in the air grew heavy, pressing down on him as if to keep him rooted to the spot.
“You must leave. I am ill, but it will pass," she managed, her tone halting and painful, "I will be fine. It is not… as bad as it seems."
“Do not lie to me. I know you are in pain,” he responded abruptly, before letting out a breath and forcing himself to relax. “Let me help.”
“No," Byleth growled harshly, and then softer, "I don't want you to see me like this.” Her words made him feel hollow, but Dimitri could not leave her. He would have rather cut out his own heart than leave her in pain alone.

“Most stubborn guy I know, really.” Sylvain steps forward, kneels at the bedside to look at him. “What do you need? Do you need me to go?”
To his surprise, Dimitri relents and shakes his head. “No. Stay, please.” His voice is winded now, and he’s pressing his thighs together in a weak attempt to stave off what Sylvain knows is coming. “You know what happens. You can...talk me through it.”

And even if he had, he certainly wouldn't ever indulge himself in such depravity.
And even if all of the above were hypothetically true, there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell that she'd react to his unsightly affections with anything short of disgust.
Or so he'd thought.
It's funny how such a simple request—one ill-thought decision—could tear asunder the vast divide drawn between them, but after experiencing just a taste of human affection, Dimitri finds that one serving could never be enough.
