Summary
A few hours ago, he’d been curled up on the floor of the Chateau’s bathroom, dry-heaving like a loser. His throat burned, his head was pounding, and his brain wouldn’t shut up about everything he’d screwed up. Stealing from his dad, running, being a piece of shit, the fact that he’d be fucking murdered as soon as he stepped foot at his house—it had all hit him at once.
He’d shaken. He’d cried. He’d felt every bit the damn waste of space his dad always said he was.
And then he’d stopped.
Gotten up. Washed his face. Fixed his shit.
Cause JJ Maybank didn’t stay down. He didn’t sit around whining and waiting for a rescue.
He’d done it because his friends needed him. Because John B needed him. And if stealing the damn pump meant the Pogue ran again, then that was just how it had to be.

Spring on the Outer Banks means two things: trouble and the Pogues finding it. JJ is fighting to keep it together at home, while John B is barely holding on after his father’s disappearance. He bites his lip again, like the pain will shake him awake if this is all a dream. It feels like it is, being comfortable and warm and surrounded by people who love him regardless of the things he hates most. His past and his scars and his fears. He doesn’t wake up, though, and he thanks the God he doesn’t know if he believes in.
He sleeps in his bed. Kiara by his side, pressed against his chest. They sleep with the window open and the door cracked, just so he doesn’t feel trapped. They talk and talk, about everything and nothing in the comfort of the dark. The only light coming from the moon and the stars outside.
AKA The Pogues buy the house JJ grew up in, and they pour their hearts into making it a home. Even when JJ can't sleep in his childhood bedroom or share the memories of his past, they stick by his side and carry him through the change. He's never been more grateful. A further take on how JJ copes with buying back the Maybank house, and the first few days after moving in.

It’s also why he doesn’t lift his eyes from the ratty blanket in his lap. Why he chews his cheek. Why he slides his hand into his hair and tugs until it hurts a little, until John B’s foot bumps against his own again.
Then, he musses his hair one last time before grinning, “Bro, you wouldn’t believe me if I told you. It was… unbelievable.”
When he lifts his eyes, John B’s already looking back at him. His smile slips. Just a fraction. Just enough.

“No shit.” JJ was on his feet before he realized it. “Dude came in looking for a fight. It’s like… Cut 101. You don’t throw a punch unless you want one.” He shrugged, but it came out tight. “Especially not at my dad.”
“You’d know, huh?”
The second it slipped, JB froze, like he wanted to grab it back, but JJ didn’t give him the chance. He stopped cold. Hands curled.
“What the fuck does that mean?”
__________JJ lives by unspoken rules: don’t mix the Pogues with your family, don’t cry, hit first, and for fuck’s sake never, ever piss Luke off.
Breaking one was all it took, and the rest went with it.
Now John B hates him, home is off-limits, and he’s stuck half-frozen on Kie’s bedroom floor trying to figure out where it all went to shit.Series

Pope just laughs, throws an arm around his shoulders. “Whatever you say, baby.”
Kie feels the butterflies in her stomach turn to dust.
“Just because I don’t drink your girly tea or what the fuck ever,” JJ starts, and Pope wrestles him into a headlock, noogies him affectionately.
“What do you have?” he says conversationally to Kie, who is staring at the two of them and every point of contact between them with steadily growing realisation.

Summary
Mike doesn’t know how long he sits on the edge of the coffee table before he hears the clatter of JJ’s boots hitting the floor. Each step is loud, angry, and then it stops all at once.
JJ’s eyes are wide, bright in their panic, and his head whips from one direction to the other before finally settling on Mike. But the tension doesn’t drain from his body when he realizes they’re alone; if anything, Mike swears he sees JJ’s breathing pick up. His chest heaves with the effort to control his breathing, his fingers shake before he closes them into fists, and his eyes linger anywhere but on Mike’s face.
He looks like a caged animal, like something feral locked up for the first time. Like if Mike moves the wrong way, JJ might literally take a bite out of him. Or claw his skin raw.
OR
Mike shows up at JJ's place after finding out he stole the money clip in episode 3x05.

Of course John B was going to try and be stupid and escapist now, when JJ has just stared at the truth head-on. He’s too annoyed to let John B do it, so he shakes his head instead of continuing the mythology.
“No bueno, asshole,” he says. “I was being cute forty-five minutes ago. You didn’t want to go to Yucatan, so it’s real talk, now. Saddle up, bitch.”
OR: in which John B apologizes for "You just wanna leave 'cause you got your ass beat?" but nothing else changes, because greed and grief are a terrible combination, and JJ Maybank doesn't know how to love without loss.

So JJ practices lying. Because he’s good at it. Because when John B lists off the attributes of his friends it goes smart, beautiful, and then kleptomaniac. Except that he doesn’t, actually. JJ actually so rarely lies to anyone that when he does it sticks, except that it means the people who know the truth, John B, Kiara, Pope, they think it’s all he ever does.
Because JJ is a paradox of a pretty open book who's also the quickest at thinking on his feet, and it means that sometimes he just wishes someone would fucking believe him, for once.
