Summary
Right. Because sex was the reason they were driving through the quiet streets of Perry North. Sex. Then sleep. Then pancakes, they’d agreed. And though desire burned through her veins, so too did apprehension.
Emotions warred inside of Samira, embarrassment somewhat quieted, overwhelmed by other feelings, sadness for Jack that sex had been something in the past that he'd used to avoid feeling, jealousy of the people he'd been with, even if, by his own admission, it had been lacking. Not for the first time that day, insecurity overcame her as she realized the chasm between their experience. A fear surfaced that she, too, would be a disappointment for Jack.

Summary
She’s not sure what she expected sex with Jack Abbot to be like. In all her wild fantasies he was in any number of positions and diffident tones whispering every unhinged, unholy thought she’d ever conjured about him back to her. She just hadn’t been prepared for him to be so mean.

Summary
“Hey.”
Samira’s shoulders drop at the familiar voice, and despite the fatigue tugging her down and the horror of whatever the fuck is in her hair, a smile creeps onto her face. She turns to look at Jack, walking from the door over to her with his arms crossed over his chest.
The company is the only good part of a night shift, in her opinion.

Summary
When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.

Robby commits the critical error of making Samira cry. Jack reacts.

Summary
She has to say it. She has to say it, because the last time someone was rolled away from her on a gurney it was to the morgue. Brushing the pads of her thumbs over his cheekbones, Samira stoops until their foreheads touch, her lips ghosting over his.
“I love you,” she whispers, eyes wide open.
Jack’s mouth curves into a gentle smile.
“I know.”

Summary
That was the thing about Abbot. He seemed to have that kind of chemistry with everyone—always a joke ready to go, a flirty smile or a wink received with a laugh. He wasn't sleazy about it. It wasn't the kind of thing that warranted a note to HR. He was congenial to a fault, but much to Samira's dismay, he never seemed to direct that kind of flirting her direction.
It was for the best, probably. For all she knew, he had shrewdly intuited her less than professional feelings towards him and was trying not to make things harder on her. And it should have made it easier. The buzzing feeling that wracked her brain when he was around would certainly be exacerbated by suggestive comments, but something about the way her brain was wired had her wondering what was wrong with her that excepted her from his charm.

Summary
If pressed to define it, Samira would describe her relationship with Jack Abbot in fairly simple terms. They are coworkers. Friends. Close friends, even, sure, she’d confidently say that. They’re certainly close, she thinks, and she’s definitely close right now, too, as she clenches her fingers tighter in Jack’s curls.

“Jack.” She grits his name out, her voice cutting through the music lowly playing through the speakers.
Jack hums, glancing over at her with a too innocent arch of his eyebrow. “What?”
“You know what.”
