Summary
Then comes the sound of someone flipping through a stack of papers. “This is what Natasha’s drawing. During free time in class.”
“Oh?” The foster mother’s voice says with a hint of real surprise.
“Kids her age don’t typically put out this sort of thing.”
Tasha’s insides begin to squirm and burn. She knows what this is about . She’d been stupid. Careless. She’d gone too far. She should’ve known. She should’ve stopped. Never done it in the first place. And now she’s being royally fucked for it.

“Hmm.” Clint examines her critically. “I’m not a doctor, but I don’t think your face is supposed to be grey and red at the same time.”
Nat brings her hands up and massages her cheeks. There’s clammy sweat in addition to what was already there. “It’s—I’m—fine…”
“No you’re not.” Clint squats beside her. “You totally just swooned. Want me to run down to the beach and get the lifeguard? I bet he’s got a first aid kit. And he’s probably wearing a Speedo, you know, if you’re interested in eye candy. I won’t be offended.”

Summary
It’s not so much a knock, but rather an awkward thump on the front door that interrupts their post-bedtime routine.
Laura mutes the TV and gives Clint a quizzical look. “Is that another raccoon, do you think?”
“Nah.” Clint rises from the sofa. “A different kind of vermin.”
“Oh.” Laura nods, and they share a knowing smile. “Should I get the med kit?”
“Probably,” Clint says. “But I’ll get a visual on her first.”

Summary
It’s calendar that gets to Sam the most, though. He’s antsy when it’s time to turns the page to the next month. The weeks and days have slipped through the autumnal equinox and the start of a new fiscal year. He tenses even more as the days pass steadily toward Halloween. Sam would throw out his calendar if he thought he could function without it, but it stays stuck to the kitchen wall. He’d forget everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries.
Sam doesn’t actually know if that’s true. It’s more of a convenient excuse. The series of dates immortalized in his mind are far from celebratory. They shouldn’t matter. It’s certainly been long enough.
The lines of squares continue to spite him, though, as he marks through through the days passed. It’s the middle of October now, and Sam is caught in the middle of an agonizing countdown.

“How much do I have to have in order to get drunk?” Steve looks at James like he’s out of his mind.
“I don’t know.” James nurses his own beer for a moment. “Three? Maybe two?”
Steve blinks at James as if he’s out of his mind.
...
James can hear the carbonation liquid popping as it runs down Steve’s throat. “Careful there. Remember what I said about breathing?”
Steve surfaces, gasping. He holds his can with the tips of his trembling fingers. “How much—?” Steve starts. “How much do you have to have to make you throw up?”Series

“Yeah. Try consulting your magic 8 ball or something. ‘S as good as anything else.”
Steve gives a quiet laugh. “I would if I could.”
“Wait, what?” Tasha’s running up the hallway, her words going from muffled to sonorous. James pretends he doesn’t suppress an instinctive swallow. He can’t acknowledge what doesn’t exist. Logic bends as James’s head makes a particularly strong throb. He’s losing his grip on reality. He must be. Tasha awake and moving at this hour on a Saturday morning? James assumes it’s still morning. It was morning when his mild headache turned to extreme vertigo and sent him tilting toward a chair.
“Oh, hey, Tasha.” Steve says.
James forces out his own sound of greeting.
“Who has an 8 ball?” Tasha speaks quickly, tripping over her words. She’s probably on an upper already. Hopefully her very own, very legal Adderall. She has absolutely no need for cocaine.Series

Summary
Steve offers a slightly crumpled brown paper napkin.
The tear hanging tremulously to the corner of her right eye lets go. It sears like hot wax, but the path it leaves is freezing. Her neurological system fails again. Nat’s thoughts evaporate. She has no words. No ability to make choices.
Thin textured paper dabs Nat’s eye. It’s becoming damp. It smells like wood pulp. And coffee. And bile. And salt. She holds it tightly and wipes downward. A combination of friction and gravity erases the tear track from her face.
“Thanks,” she whispers. Nat wads the napkin loosely in her fist. She wants to hold onto it. Useful things are good to keep

Peter sighs. He puts his hands over his eyes. “Ok, ok. But please don’t get mad at me.”
“Why would I be mad?” Tony’s still focused on the possibility of a serious health incident. Even if the kid did it to himself, he’s far more concerned about the fallout than the details. “Just tell me what’s going on.”

Summary
“Nothing.” There’s the attitude again, plus a hefty dose of irritation. Or maybe it’s aggravation? James tries not to think of her as the moody teenager she is. They’re both just people. Equitable, though differently experienced.
“Nothing. Really?”
Tasha pauses halfway down the hall. She sighs and places a hand on the wall. James automatically assumes a stance to catch her if she falls backward. If she nosedives, though, she’s on her own.
“Are you going to pass out?” James isn’t sure why he asks. Tasha will deny it either way. It feels more polite though, rather than just putting a hand on her.
“‘M fine.” Tasha cocks her hip, then scrubs her face with a closed fist. A sound of disgust escapes her lips. She snuffles, then rubs her hand hard against her skirt.
James can’t tell what she’s wiping off. Her face is still turned away, and her black leather miniskirt betrays nothing. Neither does their current conversation.
“Did you already puke?” James asks. “Bile in your nose?”

The hairs on the back of James’s neck stand up. He’s been that guy, that public servant, exchanging in verbal conflict.
...
The memories are hazy, and James works hard to keep them that way, he’s been that guy too. Losing his everloving shit at very inconvenient time and place. Before the PTSD diagnosis, before they took away his license, before even the first dose of Prozac, James had been a danger to himself as well as a danger to the public.Series

“I think you’re getting way too ahead of yourself.” Pepper motions for Tony to roll onto his back, then begins to carefully sponge sweat and grime off his face.
“Or pour some concrete. Make a basketball court.”
“Tony-”
“To invite the neighbors.”
“And double cross them to trick them into selling you the other half of the lot?” Pepper raises her eyebrows. “That’s maniacal. That’s low, Tony. That’s… very wrong.”
“You’re not listening now.” Tony fumbles for a corner of the hand towel and blows his nose with a staggered, groaning sound. “What kind of apartment kid doesn’t like to play basketball?”

Something flails across Steve’s face, and even with his hands up to deflect the hit, he’s forced flat against the mattress while a second wild swing takes out the alarm clock on the bedside table and sends it crashing to the floor.

Summary
Steve breathes a small sigh of relief, then starts counting down. He should give Bucky, what, a minute’s head start? Thirty seconds?
He makes it to twenty with the slow countdown in his head, but Steve can’t contain himself past that. The next ten seconds will be eaten up with the walk across the room, right?
Unsure if they’ll return to their seats, Steve drops cash for the bill and a tip onto the counter, then collects his jacket and weaves his way toward the bathroom. Half the bar seems to be singing, or at least laughing, along with the band as they carry on with the ridiculous chorus.
Yellow submarine.
Yellow submarine.
Steve would probably puke, too, if he was stuck in a yellow submarine. God, the water pressure would be unbearable. Did people still die of the bends?

Summary
Tasha'd been, oh, twelve, maybe, when they'd been at a quintuple birthday bash at the local bowling alley. It was for a younger kid from their house, all James remembers about him now was a penchant for eating glue, and, of course, being the nexus of the debacle to follow. It was a baby party. They were not allowed to bring their own food, and the kitchen staff produced such awful replicas of pizza and cake that James began to wonder what would happen if one took a screwdriver to the machine that dispensed pokemon stickers. Tasha was nowhere to be found, until it was time to leave, and James found a brick holding open an alarmed door just a crack. He'd pushed it wide, enjoying the satisfying creak, until the silhouettes in the corner of the room split apart and he could see David Bandino, their next-door-neighbor, who had no reason to be at the party anyway, pulling his hand out of Tasha's training bra.

Summary
Steve hears a slumping thud coming from just that vicinity of the upstairs.
Steve’s sure the wall composed of pressed powder hasn’t combusted this time. He’s already responding before his mind is done processing the sound. Did it end with the slight creak of the stressed carpet-backing? No, more like the unsettling, deflated-basketball sound of flesh on the tacky flooring in the yoga studio, guaranteed to be made with at least 50% recycled products. Steve’s narrow knowledge of bumps and bruises that sound like that are generally the result of people slipping in their own sweat. He isn’t sure what the cheap, screenprint-linoleum crossbreed sounds like when impacted with, say, a shoulder, or a head, rather than the twist-on foot of something large, square, and aluminum.
Steve takes the stairs two at a time, abandoning his phone on the bench between the coat rack and front door. No distractions. Rescue only.

Summary
“What?” Steve tries not to move, though it only takes him second to recognize the shape and sound of James having come up behind him and laid his head on Steve’s shoulder.
“Hm.” James stump is extended to its fullest and perched on the outside of Steve’s arm. His chest is on Steve’s back, though he’s cockeyed slightly, and he’s caught Steve’s hipbone with his at a sloppy T.
“Hey, Buck,” Steve murmurs. “What’s up?”
James exhales. The bowl of his pelvis conforms to Steve’s gluteus, his groin wrapping just below. His body feels muscular and toned, and his breath is hot on the side of Steve’s face.
“This, uh, isn’t the time…” Steve hisses at him.
“Hm.” James’s right leg hitches, as if he’s trying to ride Steve’s ass by hinging his knee, the toe of his shoe squeaking against the floor.
“Stop,” Steve groans. “We don’t do this in public.”
It’s only when James collapses at the beltline and gives Steve an uppercut in the chest three times over that the situation becomes clear.
“Fuck.” It’s, perhaps coincidentally, the only word Steve has at the moment.Steve wraps James’s waist with one arm and his shoulders with the other, suspending him mid-fall as the seizure takes hold of his body.Series

Clint grunts. “W’s it?” He forces out, trying to cover.
“It’s fine,” Nat reports, sitting back up as sudden dread makes her stomach jolt. “I have to—“
“No—“
“Yeah, hold still,” Nat says, trying to explain while she locates the field kit. “There’s low viz. Get ready to lose circulation in your arm…”
“Stay down. Stay quiet.” Clint pulls his jacket open to shield Nat’s body and tries flopping back on top to pin her arms. “You’re gonna get shot next—“
“Yes, sir, I will perform field medicine in the missionary position,” Nat grumbles, wedging with her knees to make enough space to open the bag and find the tourniquet.
“Nat—“ A low, gurgly cough seems to swallow Clint’s next words.
“Yeah, I don’t think you realize how much blood you’ve lost.” Nat has to reach around Clint’s head to wrap the band into his armpit and yank it toward his neck.

The vodka tastes like nail polish remover for the first few sips, but soon its flavor converts something… not nice exactly, But useful. There’s a pack of cigarettes in the bottom of the bag, too, but Nat doesn’t have a lighter, and for that, she starts to curse herself again.
She pulls the plastic wrapper in a neat line, right where the gold tape indicates, then pops back the stiff, red top. Nat shuts her eyes and chooses one. She squints to examine it, then tucks the end in her mouth for what she supposes will be foreplay. For a long time. Maybe forever.
