Summary
An angry red mark is blooming on the hard line Steve’s jaw, a visual reminder of what James is still capable of. Guilt bubbles hot and sick in the pit of his stomach.
“I…” James starts. “Stevie, I-I’m…” He shakes his head.
“It’s ok,” Steve says again. He opens his arms wide. “Can I touch you? Can I hug you?”

Summary
Tears aren’t bad. Steve tells that to his clients all the time. Sometimes they’re necessary. Emotional purging works very much in the same way as its physical counterpart: sometimes things just need to come up.
“It’s ok,” Steve soothes. “It’s ok. You’re ok.”
James pauses sniveling to listen to Steve’s voice, but then he sobs again, air gusting from his lips and making the wetness cold against Steve’s skin. The vomit on his leg is cold too. But the tears that run from the corners of his own eyes are hot. He’d hug James all day and into the night, but he also can’t take this anymore. The physical weight of him is too much on top of the weight of the responsibility Steve feels for him.

Summary
“I…” James seems to think about it. “I…don’t feel very good. I don’t want to go to the… the… whatever it is. Sorry.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it, Buck.” Steve presses the backs of his knuckles under Bucky’s chin, wondering how well he can gauge a fever when he’s running one himself.
“Are…you ok?” James asks, peering into Steve’s face.
“I actually don’t feel that great either,” Steve admits with a congested chuckle. “We’ll take it easy today.”

Summary
James doesn’t remember the pinch or the burn the first time. Just the shadows of his captors and the fog of the drug he’s been given. They’re saying something to him, but he can’t understand it. It isn’t English, and it doesn’t sound like Pashto. James cycles through the bits and pieces of French and Spanish cached in the recesses of his brain, then stops when he gets to Yiddish. It’s been greater than a decade since he’s heard any of that, though somewhere in the haze he’s eight years old again and in trouble.
There’s a sound like the cocking of a gun, and he realizes he’s just scared. Then there’s a needle in his arm again, and he’s asleep.

Summary
What?” Steve asks. “What can’t you find?”
James sighs. Shrugs. “Hearing aids.” It’s called blast-induced hearing loss, and more and more veterans are getting it diagnosed nowadays. Steve wasn’t bothered by all the what?’s and huh?’s, but he’s still glad James finally caved and let him drag him to the audiologist.
“Ah.” Steve doesn’t know what to say to this. Yesterday James had a fit and threw the bits of blue and gold plastic at him because he couldn’t fathom putting them in his ears. Now today, they’re missing in action. It only figures, since they haven’t yet been recovered from the all-swallowing carpet.

“Let me just cancel your appointment. Then we’ll go so you can have your migraine in peace.” It’s the sad truth to seizures like this. First absence. Then illness. Then pain.
“Sorry. R-really, I’m…” The words may be in the wrong order, but the sentiment is sincere.

Summary
“Come’ere, Buck.” Steve wraps his arm around James’s shoulders, gentle as the flap of a dove’s wing. His vintage soft t-shirt brushes James’s cheek, burning slightly as it scrapes over stubble, then coming to rest as warm comfort.
James nuzzles into him, sick enough to be beyond caring who might be watching and quietly judging. He’s still sensitive about public displays of affection, but today it’s trumped with worry about public displays of illness.

Summary
Steve tries medicating him, offering little blue capsules and a bottle of lukewarm beer along with James’s regular night meds. Sometimes it works and pushes him back towards the heavy dream state and drops him into unconsciousness, but more often it does the opposite makes him feel jumpy and sick, like he’s walking through a haunted house or out in the field searching down IEDs.
