Summary
The year is 2051. Dr Ryland Grace was able to come home from his suicide mission, thanks to Rocky's generosity. The Taumoeba farms worked perfectly... nothing went wrong on his journey home.
Now he is back on Earth and Eva Stratt needs to decide what to do with him... But Grace already knows what he wants; he want's to fade into obscurity and go back to teaching. Nothing is too much trouble for the man who saved the sun. So Stratt makes it happen.
Grace settles into his new life, finding comfort in his familiar routines. But something keeps gnawing at him. He's come to terms with the fact he was sent, is almost thankful for it in some ways. What he cannot come to terms with is the way he was sent and that... leads him down a journey of questionable decisions.
Simon Fisher grew up in a cult and after committing a crime at the age of 20, he spent 12 years in Prison. Then a month before his release, the world rejoices at the news that the Hail Mary mission succeeded, whilst Simon is made an offer he cannot refuse. A new identity, freedom from his cult, in exchange for information. New life acquired, it rapidly goes downhill.

“Do you… do you want to get out of it?”
Simon swallows, breathes in and out very slowly.
“It’s not possible,” he whispers. “I don’t know anything else."
“I know it’s not simple, but it can be done. I promise you Simon, it can be done! There is always an out, there is always an option! You can always run away from it!”
Simon looks at him. He takes his time tracing the edges of his face, the nearly perfectly round mole at the bottom corner of his left eye, the straight nose, the pouty lips and the light stubble. Then back up to his eyes and the little frown between his brows, dark pupils sparking with stardust.
He looks beautiful like that, earnest with conviction, so sure that Simon could have another future, if only he seized it. It feels so simple when he looks at the man telling him to just run. But Simon doesn’t know where to run to, so he stays put.
“You’re very pretty,” he blurts out.

Brother Grace laughs, hysterical and panicked. He lets his hands flop down into his lap and sighs, shaking his head like he can’t quite believe what he’s hearing. “I’m Doctor Ryland Grace. I’m from Earth. Uh, America, if that means anything to you. I teach science to middle schoolers. I am a laughingstock in my field because of one paper I wrote and one heat-of-the-moment insult I hurled. And I know…I was sent to space to do something, and I’m pretty sure that Eden isn’t my destination. That’s it. That’s all I know. Everything else is just a blur. Whatever they gave me to knock me out must’ve done some kind of damage. Between the memory loss and the headache, something must be wrong.”
Well, fuck.
That’s about as useful as a milk bucket underneath a fucking bull. And now Simon’s getting angry again.
