Summary
"What did you do?" Buck asks into the small apartment once he’s let the door fall closed behind him.
It earns him an accusing look from Eddie, who looked up at Buck as he approached, eyes narrowed and all. Buck smiles what he hopes is a blinding smile and gets the desired effect. Eddie’s shoulders drop as he relaxes, the muscles of his face go equally slack as he sighs and runs a hand over his face.
"We had a fight," Eddie admits.
"I could see that," Buck teases.

Chimney lets her pass, not even trying to make it seem like he wants to help her move the crates from her cart into the back room.
"Ah," Chimney says, deliberately unhelpful, "we got news that the original cowboy is coming back today."
Buck grimaces. "I don’t get why you call him that. It makes no sense. Why is he of all people the original cowboy? He’s not even the oldest one in town."
"Oh, it’s easy," a grin splits Chimney’s face, "it’s because you are the knockoff cowboy of his original."
Buck sputters. "That’s- that’s not what I’m trying to do here."

There’s something about building a life around people that’s so very fragile to changes in their emotions.
Buck is not a stranger to that. He knows that despite how strong he thinks their little ecosystem of people is, it’s still a family that they built around the 118. He hasn’t forgotten how off-balance everything and everyone in his life had felt when Eddie and Chimney hadn’t come to work. He’s not so naive as to believe his own actions and emotions can’t have the same impact.
In theory, that is.
In practice, it still takes him by surprise when Chimney drops down on the couch in the middle of the shift, furtively looking around as if to check that no one else is listening, and asks him "So, Buckley, as Eddie’s best friend, would you happen to know what’s going on with him? He’s been weird the last two shifts." and the only thing Buck can think of is that Buck didn’t hang out with him.

It shouldn’t be cold enough to sustain more than a few minutes of snowfall, he reasoned, not quite yet at least, and the last drop of snow seemed like just as good a reason to get up as any other. Dean doubted he’d manage to leave his spot if he didn’t set himself a deadline.
