“You can just call me Max,” she offered with a shrug as the scientist took her hand in his own calloused palm.
“Max,” he repeated, like he was testing the name on his tongue. “Kinda like Max Gibson from Batman Beyond,” he grinned, his voice trailing off towards the tail end of his sentence as his features pinched inwards at his own words, clearly embarrassed. Max fought back a full blown beaming smile at that.
“I loved that show when I was a kid,” she said, realizing the two of them had been shaking hands for longer than probably necessary before pulling away. It was Dr. Grace’s turn to beam at her.
“Ryland Grace, like the boss said,” he spoke, nodding towards Stratt who was observing the entire interaction like some sort of segment on National Geographic. “You can call me whatever.”--

“Hey! It’s a lot up here, okay? It’s a normal response to stress.” He rubs a hand over his face. “Okay, I cried a lot down there, too. But not in class! Not if I could help it. But having to say goodbye, gosh, I’ve never been good at that.” Grace laughs, but it sounds sad. His mouth is shut firmly, and he leans against my ball. He’s so soft, his body melds to the side of the xenonite with ease. “I can’t imagine what a mess I’ll be when—” he cuts himself off, but I know what was coming next.
I’m not sure how I’ll be when we say goodbye either. It didn’t seem like it’d matter so much at first, after all, if we part ways, it means we succeeded. I’d be going back to Erid, to Adrian, to home. But I’d be leaving behind Grace. The thought of that is unpleasant. It sinks deep in me; the emotion is painfully familiar. It’s been a long time since I’ve had anyone to mourn losing anyone again. I don’t want to think about it, I’m not ready.

Shen Qingqiu sighs, exasperated, clearly ready to start arguing that no, he doesn't need another disciple, when Liu Qingge's full sentence hits him. He looks at his shidi, arms crossed over his chest, expression curious.
“We’re?” he repeats, raising an eyebrow. Liu Qingge’s face is even pinker.
“Yes,” Liu Qingge says, again as if he’s having a duel with words and is losing. “Come on. I’ll choose one if you choose one.”... or, persuaded by Liu Qingge to choose a new disciple, Shen Qingqiu chooses a little, young child. With a new disciple to take care of, Shen Qingqiu only has two years until Binghe emerges from the Abyss to be ready for his death. Which would be so easy if that child disciple weren't so... strangely familiar.
