Summary
“Would you tell me about when my father was pregnant with me?” Robert whispered.
Rocky cocked his carapace. For a moment, Robert was terribly afraid he would say that Robert was too old for the bedtime story that had been their favorite for as long as they could remember.
But Rocky just rumbled softly and said, “I’ve told it six hundred thousand times.”
Their old call-and-response made a warm feeling rise in Robert’s chest. “So tell it six hundred thousand and one times.”

Summary
Grace crossed the house, grabbing his laptop and flopping down across his couch. His laptop rested on the swell of his abdomen as he opened his browser and pulled up a database of symptoms and their potential causes.
Nausea. Weight gain. Increased appetite. Fatigue. Frequent urination.
He cross-referenced with an open notebook, writing down possible diagnoses. Stomach viruses, food poisoning, metabolic changes, depression, various kinds of cancers.
Pregnancy popped up a lot, too. Over and over, for every symptom. None of the other diagnoses appeared for every one of his symptoms.
“Wouldn’t that be a riot?” Grace muttered to himself. “Human parthenogenesis in the only human on an alien planet."
---
Eridian doctors transferred a human embryo into Grace. They didn't bother asking his permission.

Summary
Hank is pulled back to consciousness by a pain in his chest— aching and constant, as if he’s been coughing too hard. That pain is accompanied by a strange, solid weight that lies not just on his chest, but all down his torso, trailing off to the side.
Hank opens his eyes.
A brown-haired man has his mouth firmly clamped over Hank’s. He blows air into Hank with such force that it makes something deep in his chest spasm.

Summary
Dr. Ryland Grace did not believe in fate or predestination but, perhaps, he should’ve kept a healthy dose of anti-skepticism in his heart, all things considered. Perhaps, if he had, his life might’ve gone an entirely different direction.
[...]
Grace finally noticed something was wrong when the lack of any noise snapped him out of his reverie. He finally looked away from his laptop, eyes faintly burning, and confusedly observed the coffee shop. Everyone, baristas included, were staring at the television, faces pale and drawn, utterly silent and motionless.
And on that sunny day Dr. Ryland Grace found refuge in a coffee shop to escape the heat, all but one week on the dot past his self-ejection from the world of academia via carbon-based insults, jobless and with all doors pointedly closed in his face, the appearance of the very first Kaiju was shaking the world at large out of all previously known logic and scientific rationale.
It wouldn’t be the last.
—————————————
Circumstances may be different, but a deep bond of friendship and love might save the day, nonetheless.

Summary
“Always so leaky,” I tease him, good-naturedly, and he lets out a wet chuckle. His smile remains after it; I could spend my entire life cataloguing the minuscule differences in all of his smiles, and what those differences mean, and it wouldn’t be long enough to discover all of them.
I used to find the expression unsettling, the way he bared his teeth at me— The knowledge that I used to do such a thing sits in the back of my mind like an ancient relic. I cannot understand why I ever felt that way. I just know I did.
“It looks great, buddy,” he says, his voice a soft, wavering thing. Much like in my imagination once more, he bends down on his knees. “Come here.”
I don’t need a second invitation.
I throw myself in his arms with as much enthusiasm as I dare to use without risking hurting him. I’m fully aware of how much heavier and stronger than him I am. How easy it would be, for me, to shred through his soft, defenseless body as if he is no more than a feeble little prey.
I do not. I never will. I’m always careful, and always will be. I already hurt him once, I can see the sign of it on his arm, like a brand, and one time is already more than I am willing to accept.

Summary
There are men turning up dead in the woods, and Chief of Police Charlie Swan has a job to do—figure out what, or who, left the poor bastards torn up as they are. Chief of Police Charlie Swan is too old for this mess. Too old and too sick of this shit to pretend Forks is just a sleepy old rural town anymore. Between the gruesome corpses and the quiet, unsettling doctor Cullen who shows up like a statue in pressed slacks, lying through his teeth, Charlie’s got more questions than answers—and no one seems too keen on giving him either.
Charlie’s trying not to notice how his breath catches when the doc gets too close. He’s also trying not to notice how the bodies keep piling up, unsolved. Neither effort is going particularly well.
And if one more person tells him it was a bear, he’s going to shoot something. Probably not a bear.

But, this momentous occasion, which should be marked by great celebration, has turned urgent and grim as Grace's life hangs precariously in the balance and Rocky finds himself unable to readjust to his homeworld, haunted by the prospect that saving the stars does not guarantee a life of peace and safety with the man he loves.
