The legal battle following the launch of the Hail Mary ends with Eva Stratt sentenced to prison, powerless to delay the coming global crisis. Stratt must finally comply with the law and come to terms with the fact that there is nothing she can do, all while being reminded constantly of the sacrifices she had to make for the project. That is, her intention is to do just that until she learns about how the world outside is faring.
