    350k words and every one of them amazing. Sephiroth's character is written in a way fandom doesn't usually portray him as: he's not a good person (though his evil is often surprisingly mundane - just a person with too much power and too few limits), and the author has no illusions that he is good, but he's interesting and easy to sympathize with.

    The story is about Sephiroth and his daughter, Toriko, conceived when he assaulted a prisoner of war in Wutai (he's not a good person). When she's 11, she ends up living with Sephiroth. Toriko is very well-written, and a perfect balance of childish, tragic, and a bit creepy - she definitely takes after her father. Her and Sephiroth's relationship is fascinating, and not particularly healthy. Family fluff yes, but Sephiroth's only experience with children is his own childhood, and so he mostly treats Toriko more like a cadet than a kid (he would say that that's far nicer than his own childhood and he wouldn't be wrong.)

    Long, rather dark overall, though there's some fluff and surprisingly funny moments. Warning for discussions of sexual assault, of adults and minors, in-universe racism and sexism (and occasional homophobia), and various other heavy subjects.

    Angst, political intrigue, humor, fluff, development of background characters (especially Reeve's family, Rufus and the Turks, Wutai as a whole, Toriko's mother), and a gripping overall plot.

    Without exaggeration, the best work of fiction I've read in a long time.

    It was a one-hit KO. Del is helpful to a pathological degree. She must have smelled this on him. She must have also sensed that he hates guessing what someone wants from him, because she made it very clear– she wanted his notes. And then she wanted to study together. And then she called him one night from a frat party, ranting drunkenly about how her friends had abandoned her and there were creepy guys and before she’d even finished her sentence, Del had been outside and on his board.

    When his dad comes back into the clearing with a scrawny kid he's just bought in tow, Dean isn't surprised. He knows Lilim aren't human, that they're creatures, like witches or wendigo.

    But the kid that John's got by the arm, who's pulled as far away from Dean's dad as possible without actually trying to get his arm back, the kid whose eyes don't leave John and are bright with fear, the kid who looks like he hasn't eaten in a couple of days and is obviously favoring his left leg...

    This kid looks an awful lot like a person. And what's more, he's the same age Sammy would have been.

    They move in a synchronized dance. When one moves forward, the other moves back—one attacks, the other blocks. Each beautiful on their own, but exquisite when brought together.

    The image burns into Sephiroth's mind. Cloud's undivided focus, his lips pulled back in an angry snarl. He presses forward relentlessly despite being no match for Sephiroth's skill and experience. It's as irritating as it is exhilarating. He never wants to look away.
