It seemed that Christmas was a much bigger deal over here. Richard had decorated for Christmas a whole month before the holiday. He had put up lights, and he had even brought in an entire tree into the penthouse. He told Damian it was tradition, but his mother had never brought in the outside greenery.
Another strange “tradition” Richard had introduced was something called gingerbread houses.

He had thought his confusion then was bad, but Damian couldn’t even begin to explain his pure bewilderment upon waking up and seeing an entire tree in the house. Had his father brought it in? Why was it in the house? Were there still animals living in it, or had they been stripped of their homes?
It didn’t even look like the kind of trees they had surrounding the manor. Damian couldn’t imagine his father would have gone out miles upon miles just to decorate their interior with a pine tree.

“What is this?” Damian scrunched up his nose, looking at the small house. It had 24 mini doors, each one labeled 1-24. The house was decorated to resemble a gingerbread house. The craftsmanship looked cheap, and definitely not hand carved or handcrafted. It didn’t even feel like wood- it felt like flimsy cardboard. Damian could get a better quality model house at Walmart.
“An advent calendar.” Tim said, sipping his coffee. “Bruce gets them for us every year.”
Damian hummed. If father often got these “calendars” for his children every year, then Damian should expect one yearly from now on. Not much to look forward to. “How is this a calendar? It has no dates.”
OR: Damian learns what an advent calendar is, and he’s far more intrigued than he’d like to admit.
