    Frozen in shock, Yanagi watched as Miyabi nodded solemnly like a monk aligning chakras and raised her own hands.

    “Six,” she began, lifting her left hand slightly higher than her right.

    Yanagi felt her soul leave her body.

    “...seveeeeen,” she finished softly, bringing her right hand upwards. She closed her eyes, breathing deeply as her hands flowed rhythmically. After what felt like a millennium, Miyabi opened her eyes again, nodding in approval.

    “...Excellent,” she said, with a hint of a satisfied smile on her face. “We will incorporate this into our daily training.”

    Beside her, Harumasa went pale, and Yanagi wondered if resignation letters could be filed retroactively.

    In which Harumasa teaches Sokaku how to say six seven, and it backfires on them all. horrendously.

    The conclusion Wise came to, as he lay awake in the Outer Ring heat at 4 am, cicadas chirping in the background, was simple: Lighter liked Belle.

    It made perfect sense. Wise stared at the chipped wooden ceiling, replaying the conversation from two hours ago in his mind. Belle ticked all of Lighter’s boxes, didn’t she? Lighter was charming. Belle was, and Wise would never say this to her face, charming. Belle was Lighter’s type, and Wise was sure that Lighter would be anyone’s type. Just look at him.

    Satisfied with his deduction, the Deputy Manager closed his eyes.

    Hugo’s resentment at Lycaon’s decision to leave Mockingbird, his hatred towards his father, the fear as he sat at Lycaon’s side, waiting – for either help to come, or for Lycaon’s heartbeat to fade away – all of that has been smothered by sheer exhaustion, leaving Hugo numb and empty.

    Without his emotions getting in the way, Hugo’s thoughts are startlingly clear.

    Betrayals and abandonment, secrets and broken promises – none of those matter. All that matters is Lycaon, and who he is to Hugo.

    His dearest partner, now turned his greatest traitor.

    And yet—

    —still his, always.

     

    (Their confrontation after the failed assasination attempt on the Ravenlock family head is not the last time Hugo sees Lycaon; before they go their separate ways, Hugo makes several arrangements that, years later, will influence his reunion with Lycaon and set the stage for future collaborations.
