Stede laughed, then actually looked at the stranger by his side. He realized that he did know the man, in fact -- or, at least he recognized him as a fellow regular at O & P. Hard to miss him, in fact, with that stunning head of black and silver curls, seemingly perfect jawline, and wardrobe of an apocalypse movie hero.
Stede blurted out "Crumpet Man!" before he could process what his brain was yelling at him not to say out loud. The stranger raised an eyebrow -- just one, so cool -- and said "is that your superhero name?"
Oh, God, why didn't a portal to outer space ever open when one really needed it?

Stede's brain -- which is, granted, full of rum and sadness and thus moving a bit sluggishly -- fails to process what is happening until Steak's hands are on the buttons of his breeches, undoing the front fall and reaching into his smalls.

"Captain Bonnet? Something wrong?"
"I -- just -- uh. What are you doing down there?"

Stede heaves what he thinks must be a quite forlorn and dramatic sigh, leaning out over the railing, and then realizes someone has come over to slouch on the rail next to him. When he glances up he's surprised to see Frenchie.
"Sorry to intrude on your moping, Captain, I can leave you to it if you'd rather."
"Oh! No, no, I'm not -- it's fine, I just -- " and then he stops, acknowledging that yes, he's miserable and feeling sorry for himself. He's never been good at hiding his feelings, after all.

It took a couple of tries, and finally the boot came free, with Stede letting out a rather undignified squeak at the movement. Ed dropped it on the floor and soon had the other on the rug, as well as his stockings. Stede flexed his feet in relief, and then Ed … grabbed his foot? Wiggled his toes? What?
