After the defeat of Doflamingo, Sabo is about to kill Burgess, when the Devil Fruit Hunter offers him a deal that he cannot refuse.
"I know a Devil Fruit user that can help you to get your brother back. If you let me live, I'll take you to her."
He knows that this could be a trap, but there is no way that Sabo will let the chance to save the boy he loved go. The pain that he never got to meet a grown up Ace, never told him how he felt and the realisation that Ace died not knowing that he was alive, all tear Sabo apart day by day.

As the eldest, Ace has a steady job to provide for his brothers, but that family alone has never been enough to quell his fear of abandonment. He never gets attached in relationships, he flirts, sleeps with all kinds of men and women. He actively shuns the idea of falling in love.
Sabo focuses on taking care of his family, doing all the household chores. He's had a lot of practice hiding his feelings from Ace, betraying no emotions for years. But when it all becomes too much and his heart can't take it anymore, he does what he does best. He runs away.

Seeing Ace’s wince out of the corner of his eye, Sabo gave the boy an apologetic smile. “Next time, Luffy. It’s Whitebeard’s birthday party, remember, so only Ace can go.”
