“Perhaps I could help somehow?” Sherlock offers hesitantly, needing to be able to do something, to solve something.
“Find me a suitable girlfriend?” John jokes bitterly.
“I could do that. I’m sure I could design an algorithm that uses data to find you the perfect date.” Sherlock reaches for his notebook and pen, already scribbling down ideas, unaware of John staring incredulously at him. At the sound of John’s mug thunking on the wooden table top Sherlock looks up, raising an eyebrow in query.
“W..what?” John crosses his arms and bites at the inside of his bottom lip, studying Sherlock intently before arriving at a decision. “Oh, what the hell. Go on then."

There’s a dog. It’s thin and dirty and trapped, the rope around its neck twisted viciously into a knot and then tied to the rail of the steps leading out of one of the buildings lining the alley. It’s an Irish Setter, John sees, and obviously a puppy, and it’s making low, keening growls in that back of its throat, teeth bared. Menacing, despite how tiny and scrawny it is.
“John” Sherlock says.

This fic goes canon divergent for everything following Mary acting as a client in His Last Vow. Sherlock misses John. John misses Sherlock. Victor Trevor, Sherlock's oldest friend (and a super nice guy in this version) and participant in the 'great sexual experiment of '98' shows up to cuddle the hell out of a touch-starved Sherlock, get him talking, and get those two idiots back together. "It was a military portrait, with John in a uniform. It seemed like John had tried to look stately, but a bit of a smirk had gotten through the hard expression he had tried to assume. There were medals decorating his breast as well as a single star above them. From Sherlock's research on various militaries, that usually meant a very high rank. Of course Sherlock already knew John was a prince, but John seemed to be a prince of action. Sherlock liked that. To him it even seemed a bit attractive.
Sherlock was surprised at this feeling. He had never felt any attraction to any merpeople or the like. No one ever seemed to amount to his intellect. In their ignorance, they would just brush him off as a freak that was too observant. How could the detective ever find such foolishness attractive?
John, though, had said he was brilliant."
