"Close," Butch says as he pockets the lighter and exhales, it makes his voice sound tight, "Freddie's had eyes for Susie for a while now, but Wally don't think Freddie's good enough for his sis, so Wally told Paul to ask Susie to the dance cause he thinks Paul's better suited, an' to keep Freddie distracted, Wally told him to ask you."

Things he’s never told anyone, things he can hardly admit to himself but he shared it so freely to a man who was never intent on listening in the first place and now Sam is openly sobbing, and the chain jingles as he pulls his legs up to his chest and wraps his arms around his knees, in the very bed where Alan used to lay.
It still smells like him, and that’s the worst part, being haunted by everything that could’ve been, except not really because it’s all just a fantasy in his head. He tried so hard to ignore the reality in front of him, because he needed to believe he could actually make this work.

And then here comes this girl, ripping right through those carefully constructed walls, ripping through his mind. She saw past his mask, and she didn't run. She saw him, really saw him, and she didn't leave. And she's just done it a second time, and has given him a second chance, a second life. She saw him begging for help, and she helped him. When all his life, everyone has always consistently turned away, Jane offered her hand.
