He follows the guy inside and toward the back. "I'm, uh, Evan. Buck. Evan Buckley."
The guy looks over his shoulder and grins, which makes him look like a movie star instead of a mob enforcer. "Sal Deluca."
They get to the backyard, and there's another man there. He's got a shovel in the ground and is leaning on it while he taps on his phone screen with a frown.
"Babe, I don't think we need to dig that deep for a tree this small," he says, glancing up and then doing a double-take. Buck almost does one himself. The guy is big, maybe only his height but big. "Who's this?"
"Evan Buck Evan Buckley," Sal says, and Buck flushes, waving at the other man.
"Tommy," the man says, checking his hand before sticking it out to shake. "Sorry, I've been doing yard work all morning. You're the new neighbor, right?"
"Y-yeah," Buck says. "I just moved in a few days ago."

In front of him, Buck twists against the handcuffs, a pained sound between his teeth. His eyes open in slow increments and focus over Eddie’s shoulder, and he doesn’t look confused, but afraid.
“Am I dead?” Buck says, and the other Buck laughs.
“No,” he says. He raises a gun with a theatrical air, and Eddie looks down its cold barrel to his cold eyes.

“Stop it,” Buck huffs out, shuffling out of reach. “You’re being ridiculous.”
“I’m not doing anything,” Eddie insists, sliding backwards until his socked foot touches Buck’s leg again.
“You’re being a dick.”
Buck attempts to move away again, and Eddie follows him, refusing to stop touching him with his socks until suddenly Buck’s not there anymore and a loud thump echoes throughout the room.
“Did you just—”
“Shit,” Buck mutters, and Eddie can vaguely see the shape of Buck’s body in the dark as he heaves himself up off the floor. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

Sal’s hand itches to settle on Eddie's waist to hold him close. “Sorry, didn't realize.”
“I didn't say you needed to stop.” And when Eddie pulls back a little, his hair’s falling over his forehead and his cheeks are pink from alcohol, and Sal needs to go.
He excuses himself quickly and ends up in a hall past the bathrooms that probably leads to the back of the building. He's half tempted to find out, because he's forty-three and he has a crush.

"So, you're all—" she gestured vaguely at his face, “—because Eddie picked up fish off the ground and put them in tanks."

"It sounds so impressive, honey," Maddie said patiently. "Not just anyone can pick up fish."
