Steve looked up at his roommate in confusion. “What?”
“Thats not the secret. The secret,” Jonathan started as he cautiously took a seat on the corner of Steve's king-sized bed, “is that she has a good reason to.”
“It's my fault,” The Byers boy said, as if that explained everything.
However, Steve was not exactly known for being quick on the uptake, even when things were spelled out for him. And here, in this moment, Jonathan was clearly holding back, not spelling anything out. "What is?"
“That my brother is… the way that he is.” Jonathan went on to say, having Steve's full attention. He thought of Will, that strange boy, who he had seen rocking back and forth on his elder brother's bed, despondent, almost entirely mute, and missing an eye. How could that possibly be the fault of a brother only a few years older, who seemed to have nothing but love for the odd boy, Steve had no clue. So he blinked a few times, and gave a look he hoped to convey ‘continue’ without interrupting.

But that’s because he’s getting put in the wrong kinds of fights. They think he’s a hammer, when really, anyone who grew up BFFs with Carol becomes a scalpel.
(Dustin gapes like a fish. “Holy shit, dude…” Steve would chide language if he thought it would do anything. “You just performed real life Vicious Mockery. I think that guy took psychic damage!”)

After getting a look at the kid's high school schedules, Steve asks Will a question about one of his teachers in order to keep him safe. Will makes some correct assumptions about what happened to Steve and tries to puzzle out whether or not it was bad. He seeks advice before eventually telling Steve what he learned. Steve... doesn't take it well.
This is a story of healing from child sexual abuse and grooming, but it's also a love story. It's a story about Steve learning to lean on others for support and offer support without hurting himself.
Please mind the tags, they're there for a reason. Rated E mostly for the theme, though there will likely be smut in the last chapter. Tags are subject to change.

Lucky they were able to be here together at all.
Okay, maybe he was being a little dramatic. It wasn’t that serious, and it’s not like those things were ever far from his thoughts anyhow. Steve thanked whatever deity controlled the universe every single day for the fact that he and Eddie had gotten their second chance, their happy ending.
But, it was hard to feel lucky when that little fucker was intent on getting on his last nerve.

In hindsight, it was all a disaster waiting to happen.
In reality, Steve just curses his bad luck. Though all the beatings over the years, the punches and the kicks and plates being smashed over his head, he’s never once gotten an infection or been down for any real amount of time.
When he wakes in a cold sweat with heat pouring from the still open and angry bites on his sides, he knows his luck has finally run out. It’s his own fault, really, for not getting them seen to in time, for thinking he’d be fine with some antibiotic ointment and gauze like they weren’t created by alternate dimensional creatures.

“What’s wrong with what I wrote?” Steve whines, running his fingers through his hair until it’s all mussed up and falling into his face.
Chrissy snorts. “It sounds like you’re telling him his hair is frizzy and dry.”
“I said it was pretty!” He throws his hands in the air before crossing them and pouting his lower lip out.
Chrissy can’t help but laugh. She’s always liked Steve. He’s nicer than most of his friends, and he’s easy to talk to. But this is a side she’s never seen of him. She’s not sure anyone has; can’t imagine Carol or Tommy seeing him put his whole heart into something and not tearing it to shreds.
“Do you use conditioner?” she asks, throwing finger quotations around it as she reads it off the crumpled page.
Steve’s blushing again, cheeks all blotchy and red, rather unbecoming for the shoo-in for this year’s prom king. “Well, I thought you said you’d help!” he says, a little too loud for the library.
