It was sadistic, this whole thing. Wicked, that he’d even consider it.
But then, In-ho was already quite wicked, wasn’t he? He was not a religious man by any means, but if there truly was a hell waiting for him the minute he died, he didn’t doubt that he was already well on his way to going there. It didn’t matter what he did now, what he might do later.
The red in his ledger was far too deeply stained for him to ever fully wipe it clean.
It was too late for him. Far, far too late.
And he was only a man, after all.

Hwang Inho, the man, has died with his wife and his child. The Frontman is not that man, will never be that man, and that is okay because his wife would have never loved the Frontman, would have never understood. Like Gihun, she was too headstrong, too righteous, too good to allow doubt to creep in her and accept what is the truth about human nature.
But if Gihun had not been an exception to the rule, so wouldn't have been his wife.

Xie Lian can only clench his whole body tighter at those words, a whine stuck in his throat. He cries even harder, until he makes himself heave, and the man holding him captive rubs his back patiently, waiting calmly for him to breathe through his nose as he’s instructing him. Xie Lian doesn’t have any strength left in him to fight back, so he has no option but to obey.
“That’s it,” the man praises, kissing his lips sweetly. “Just take another deep breath for me. This will be uncomfortable only for a second. Dianxia can squeeze my hand if it’s too much.”

“Xianle, Xianle… Your mouth spat nonsense too.” His thumb ran on his lips, and removed it when Xie Lian was ready to bite him.
Jun Wu chuckled and continued his exploration. His palm stopped on his heart, and he smiled, feeling how fast his heartbeat was.
“Your heart won’t listen to me either.” Jun Wu pressed softly on his chest, and enjoyed seeing him struggle again. “What will I do with you if you won’t listen?”
Jun Wu found a way to make sure that Xie Lian listen... In a way or another.

“Mind telling me what this is?” Hua Cheng asked.
Curious, Xie Lian brought a hand to it, and he traced the delicate filigree that ran along the edges of the box. Hua Cheng seemed to think that he knew what it was, but he really couldn’t recall. It wasn’t until his hand laid flat on the lid of the coffer that something suddenly clicked, and it brought a mortifying memory to the surface.
All the blood quickly drained from his face, and he clutched the lid tightly enough to whiten his knuckles, too.
“You already know what this is… don’t you?” he asked meekly.
“I do,” Hua Cheng confirmed. “But I’m curious to know where you found such a thing. Won’t you tell me?”
…
Nestled within the box was that dreadful child-bearing pill that was almost gifted to Hua Cheng a while back.
Xie Lian suffers the consequences (or rather, reaps the rewards) of hanging on to one of Hua Cheng's birthday gifts.

Summary
The Book 5 sequence in the Heavenly Capitol goes differently. Instead of trying to hide his treachery, Jun Wu decides to bet everything he has on breaking Xie Lian with his own hands, and rolls the dice on being able to do it before Hua Cheng can come to his rescue.
But when gambling against a ghost king, one has to be very sure of their luck--for even the very fortunate can find themselves rolling snake eyes when Crimson Rain Sought Flower plays for keeps. And the Crown Prince of Xianle is not so willing as Jun Wu would like to be made into a pawn.

The accusation gets to Mu Qing. Feng Xin can tell. He may hate the guy with every fiber of his being, but he and Mu Qing were two planets orbiting the same sun for the majority of their lives. Two planets that clashed together every now and then, an eclipse gone wrong, but Xie Lian had kept them upright. Xie Lian had kept them steady.
