As smoke filled the air, he scrambled onto the counter, yanked the smoke detector from the ceiling, and tossed it across the room before it could betray him. The little device exploded against the wall. Probably a little overboard, but it got the job done.

His next movements were swift and mechanical, shedding his bullet-ridden chest plate and replacing it with the quietly beeping one. As the plate clicked into place, a shudder ran through him. He still had time, time to reconsider, to return to a life he thought he would never have again.

Suddenly aware and growing insecure of his accent leads him to grow insecure of his skin, leading him to grow insecure of his weight, leading him down a spiral. He needs to be perfect. He will do everything in his power to be perfect, as to not bring shame onto his family name. He will be perfect, even if it destroys him.
