‘How do I change this? How can I save Arthur’s life?’ Emrys voice wavered even in his mind.
‘For all those versions that the prophecy goes unfilled, there is only one version that succeeds. Only one version where Arthur Pendragon lives a very long life.’
'What was different about that other version? Of that other realm? Why did we only succeed in one reality?’ Merlin asked desperately.
Gahn turned and walked back to Merlin, crouching to bring their faces closer together. ‘Because in every reality you’ve failed, you were as you are now. Young, naïve…’ Gahn ran a gaze down Merlin’s body. ‘….male.’
Merlin froze at the words, ‘What?’
Gahn tilted his head and gave Emrys a sad smile, ‘In the only reality that succeeded, Emrys was a woman.’
