He sees him - his hair still pinned in a topknot, his beard still scruffy but in a way that can almost pass off as fashionable these days, one hand wrapped around the cup of coffee, bending down over his book. The distinctive splash of white on the side of his face is gone - but that is nothing, these days there is makeup and hair dye and tattoos that can do anything - as an immortal, one has to learn to blend in. He knows before he sees the prosthetic arm - now made out of some gleaming alloy, and yet the movements somewhat less graceful than the blood-soaked bone he used to carry with his sword, but he supposes this is not a world for shinobi and their equipment. It has not been for a long time.There is a roaring in his ears, a beast ripping his chest.

It’s a boy, Masanaga thinks— they’re gaunt and unkempt, the kind of clean that speaks of one good bath they were given under duress before being dragged here. They’re cowering, but into themselves and not Owl, which says something about their intelligence at least. They’re small; Masanaga doesn’t know how old they are, and he doubts they know, either, but after so long at Hyakka it has become second nature to look at a child and know what kind of shinobi they will make.
This one will be monstrous, if only his father lets Masanaga have them.

Wolf slumped forwards onto his knees. He didn’t have the energy to spit out the blood that had pooled in his mouth, instead allowing it to pour past his lips and drip onto the floor. The faint clatter of teeth amongst the gore rang softly in Genichiro’s ears, the sound far lovelier than the gentle patter of raindrops against the tiled rooftops.
He wanted to hear it until Wolf had none left to lose.
“There’s better uses for your tongue,” Genichiro told him. Weakly, Wolf glanced back upwards. His face was flushed, his breaths soft and tremulous, his own cock hard and straining against his hakama. “Teeth aren’t a necessity.”

Summary
Wolf blinks up at the sky through eyes that want to stay closed. The sunlight is filtered through the trees, faint as it always is in Ashina, but even that hurts to look at. In Ashina, Wolf thinks.
He is back in the depths of Ashina, washed there from the flooded palace, just more runoff from the gods. Another dead thing that cannot be allowed in the heavens.
Wolf is not surprised to be one of them. He closes his eyes and thanks the waters; it is not the first time he has prayed, but it is the first time he has meant it.
His thoughts are thick like melted sugars, stuck together too long in his pouch and misshapen against one another. Breathing hurts. Existing hurts. Wolf is so thirsty but no matter how much he drinks, it is not quenched.
Wolf is hungry, but the thought of hunting game to roast over a fire makes his stomach churn with disgust. He thinks of the enemies in the divine realm, and their blood heavy over his tongue.
Wolf needs to find someone. Anyone.
Wolf needs to go home.
