When he asks Athena what day it is, he's completely taken aback when she says the 14th.
He had forgotten about Valentine's day.
As dread settles in his gut he wonders if he’d have time to do something small for Gabriel on his lunch break, and he checks his calendar to see if he could escape the base during the day. As he scans the countless meetings and debriefings lined up for him to attend, he realizes he’d be lucky to even eat lunch at all.

Summary
It’s been nearly ten years. Overwatch is gone from the public eye, forgotten, and so are Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes. Their message, their work, their victories, none of it is remembered, only the mutilated half-truth of their mistakes remains. Yet here they still stand, broken and divided. Not dead and not quite living.
Every day is a struggle for survival, but the thought of dying before saying goodbye is more than either of them can handle. So they keep going, keep hoping that the other will be the one to say “Hello again”.
Sombra, meanwhile, is sick of Gabe brooding and forcing her to keep surveillance of Soldier 76 in the name of “intel”, so she takes their lives into her own hands.
A fire is only dead once the embers cool to ashes, without the lingering heat of embers there is no risk of flames. While their fire never really died, they have left themselves with just the ashes and embers.

Jack couldn’t remember exactly when he’d instructed Athena to stop observing his and Gabriel’s meetings. If you could call them meetings. Gabriel would barge into Jack’s office, spitting acid about some limitation on Blackwatch’s resources and Jack would fail to keep his cool, deride some shady tactic Blackwatch used on a mission they weren’t even supposed to go on. Gabriel would yell about necessity and Jack would yell about consequences. They’d both be snarling into each other’s faces, voices loud, blood spiking hot, violence pushing up against their skin.
By the time Gabriel stalked out, they’d have solved nothing. Jack’s pulse would be pounding and the back of his shirt would be damp with sweat. It was, Jack loathed to admit, the only thing that elevated his heartrate these days.
