Summary
Most cultivators come into their second gender shortly after they reach the age of seventeen.
For those very, very few lucky enough to have a soulbond, this is also the age when those bonds become possible.
Amongst the sects, Lan's are known to have an unusually high number of soulbonds vs. the rest of the cultivation world, and even they usually only have one every few generations.
There has never been a case of anyone bonding without having reached their second gender, but there have been cases of Cultivators reaching maturity before the age of 17.
What if Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji were meant to be soulmates. But since Jiang Cheng had not yet presented when he lost his core, they didn't realise it.Series

Words slashed through the air like a sharp blade, rendering Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji speechless, this was the last thing either ever expected to hear. Helplessly they looked over at Lan Xichen, who didn’t meet their gaze, lips now set in a tight line, eyes looking down on the ground.
Quietude stretched on in the space, it clings to everyone present, stunning all with the daunting implication of the words that dropped. Wei Wuxian was the first to break through, not being able to hold off his unsettling, “What do you mean he’s missing?” voice strained, unwilling to believe it.

Summary
The spiral of his thoughts drained him further. The fire of determination had been snuffed out within him and Jiang Wanyin was out of reasons to keep on fighting. As he lay down on his bed, he dreamt of life without all of these feelings he had struggled all his life. He wanted to get away from himself and from how draining his life was. But he knew he couldn’t do that if he kept surrounding himself with the people and places that reminded him of those feelings.
Here, in Lotus Pier, the memories of his inadequacy in so many ways suffocated him slowly and constantly throughout his life. All his life, he had been drowning. Eventually, he knew he would stop struggling to stay afloat and just let the water swallow him.
This place was going to kill him.

“Wanyin, wanyin, wanyin. Why? Why didn’t you tell me?” Lan Xichen had started to cry as he brought Jiang Cheng’s hand to his cheek. His face was full of grief, anxiety, and desperation.
Jiang Cheng was little surprised, but he quickly replied, “If your Shufu isn’t able to help me, what could you do? Xichen, everyone’s life has an end unless those cultivate to become an immortal, My life is just ending earlier than others.“
“...It was inevitable for me anyway, since, I had suddenly qi deviate. But, why do you want to cultivate together?” Their relationship was uncertain. Even Jiang Cheng didn’t know where they stood. Though, he did very much so like Lan Xichen, it was impossible.

“A beast,” finished another of the disciples, looking at the ground. They were hiding something, shifting on their feet and their eyes downcast.
“It’s a dragon!” blurted one of the youngest disciples present and everyone stared at him, Lans in disbelief and Jiang disciples in horror.
“What did sect leader Jiang say about the creature?” asked Xichen because if Wanyin believed it to be a dragon as well … Then it was no wonder he was the one they called.
Yunmeng Jiang's disciples looked at one another, clearly uncomfortable with the question.
“Sect leader Jiang …” finally said the oldest one. “Nobody has seen sect leader Jiang since yesterday.” -

Summary
It is a story that begins with Xichen being in seclusion, hurting and blaming himself, scared to face the world. But then one day he receives a letter with a complaint from Sect Leader Jiang that changes literally everything.
Xichen is slowly changing into a different person, confident and assertive like he had never been before. He gains a lover and a circle of friends he knows he can trust.
But not everybody is happy with his renewed persona, some are waiting for the best moment to strike and destroy his newly found happines. But for what reason do they do that? Very basic - they desire a power and Xichen as he is now is not easy to manipulate, he is attentive and won't let his sect be ruled by unkind people who are selfish and have evil intentions towards his sect and people he loves and treasures.
The battle begins, between those scheming cowardly from shadows and those who have their heads proudly raised, fighting for what they hold dear. Will love, friendship and brotherhood win once again over evil and darkness?
We will see.

…"You wish to know why the boggart yao did not take on a form when it faced me?" he asks. "What should I have left to be afraid of, I wonder? Losing my parents, my siblings, my home? The shidis and shimeis I grew up with? Or should I fear failing my duty to my sect by remaining unmarried and heirless? Perhaps I should be scared of failing those I love the most."
He risks a glance towards Wei Wuxian and Jin Ling, and instantly regrets it. Wei Wuxian is in tears, and his nephew doesn't look a whole lot better. Breathing in deeply, Jiang Cheng looks at Lan Xichen instead, drawing strength from the steadiness of his presence.
"What form could a boggart yao take for me," he finishes, "when everything I ever feared has already come to pass?"

“You are not welcome here,” Lan Xichen then says and Jiang Cheng frowns.
Is there someone else with them? Surely Lan Xichen did not just say that to his brother or his brother-in-law.
“Xichen-ge,” Wei Wuxian whines and it’s so familiar that Jiang Cheng can’t help the little quirk of his mouth.
“No. He is not welcome in the Cloud Recesses and you all know it.”
“Wen Ning didn’t do anything!” Wei Wuxian protests and Jiang Cheng tenses.
Of course it would be Wen Ning, he’s following Wei Wuxian around like a lost little puppy. Jiang Cheng has to remind himself to unclench his hand, otherwise he might break one of Lan Xichen’s favourite tea cups and while he’s at it, he takes a deep breath, too.
