His shoulder knocked into someone passing him and he turned to apologize to the man when he saw a look of horror dawn on his face. He heard the discordant sound of smashing piano keys, and then suddenly, nothing at all.

What he had with Cole was earned—trust that had been gained through blood, late-night confessions, and impossibly soft touches. He thought hazily back to the beginning of their interactions, from the mutual begrudging respect and shared vices to the eventual seed of affection that was carried tenderly between them. The two of them had moved so carefully around the other, as if afraid that this new thing could simply disintegrate on their fingertips.
