I'm leaving this letter to let you know I've gone north. I meant to say goodbye, but you've been travelling for more than a month now and I can't wait for you to come home. You'll think me selfish for leaving like Techno did, and maybe you're right, but different as we are I think he had the right idea in his “asking for forgiveness rather than permission” philosophy.
All of Phil's children left home in much the same way; bag packed, open front door, no goodbye. They all left notes, which is more than Phil had done when he would similarly depart on his sudden adventures. Wilbur is just the only one who kept writing.
