Summary
He knows it's wrong to go through Maverick's stuff behind his back but Bradley's interest is piqued now, and anyway if there was anything Maverick didn't want him to find, he wouldn't have sent him looking. He figures a quick peep won't do any harm.
He flips through the papers again, and eventually fishes out one of the most tattered ones. It's crinkled and the ink has faded over time, and Bradley realizes he's holding it upside down.
The first line feels like a punch to his gut.

She dreads what Bob might say—it's been too long, she should be over it by now. It wouldn't be the first time someone's spewed something along those lines. But Bob takes his time to carefully think through every word, and when he finally speaks again, his voice is gentle.
“Some things you don't have a choice about. Some of us get luckier than others, I guess. But I think you already have what you wish for.”
She sharply looks up. “How?”
Sure, she keeps in touch with a few people she knew before the Navy and she has some favorite places she'll always return to but not in the same sense most people mean when they think of home. Not in the same sense Bob does.
Bob lets out a small chuckle. “Blood is not the only thing that makes someone family, Phoenix.”

Bradley wakes up late on Tuesday morning. It's the third week of classes and he'd stayed up too late in the lounge with the other guys watching the game. His alarm should have gone off at 7:30, but he probably forgot to set it the night before. He wakes up to a pounding on his door at 8:50, and by 8:55 the world has changed.
Going to war. Uncle Wood says they're going to war and yeah, Bradley thinks to himself dumbly, that makes sense. But if the nation is going to war, his entire family is going with it.
