John’s heart gave a stutter and butterflies fluttered in his stomach – he knew that look to be a rare thing; a gift bestowed solely on him. Not once had it failed to make him feel like a love-sick teenager enamoured with his best friend. To him, Gale looked to be the perfect picture of contentment, all cozied up and ready for bed, a sight reserved for his eyes only. It was a marvel that they’d made it this far, John thought, that I’m even alive to get to see him like this.

“Is that so?” Asked the bouncer with a raise of his eyebrow, “Got any ID?”
He held out his hand, looking bored as Gale searched around inside his head for something to say.
“Sure,” said Gale, hoping the bouncer couldn’t see him sweating as he opened up his backpack and started rummaging for something they both knew wasn’t there. This went on for an excruciating few seconds while the man on the door watched him, clearly unimpressed, before he felt a large hand on his shoulder. He looked up in shock to find himself staring straight into the face of a dark haired man with a spectacularly unfashionable moustache.
“Hey, man, what the hell took you so long?” He said, leaving his hand on Gale’s shoulder where it felt like it was burning a hole through Gale’s thin vest. The bouncer looked between them with one eyebrow raised curiously.
“You know this guy?” He asked.
“Yeah, old friend of mine, ain’t ya?” He asked Gale, who nodded in return, working hard to the stress off his face. “We go all the way back.”

“John?” It’s Marge’s voice that comes through the line, and she sounds distant, like her mouth isn’t near the receiver. “It’s Marge.”
“Well, hello Marjorie.” John asks, with a grin. “To what do I owe this pleasure?” There’s a lilt to his voice that perhaps borders a little too much on flirting considering she’s another man’s wife – specifically, his best friend’s wife. But Gale never calls him on it, and Marge allows it, so John never pushes for why.
“Uh, it’s, ah – it’s Gale.” Her voice is closer now, but pinched in that concerned way that people sound when they don’t know how to say what it is that’s wrong.
OR: Gale has a flashback, and Marge calls John when she's out of options, knowing he'll be able to help Gale.

All humour dies in Gale’s throat as John begins to move. He changes position, tucking one arm beneath Gale’s neck, and with his other hand he pulls him closer by his waist. With John’s thigh still between his, Gale can feel the contours of his hips against his own. The thin layers of cotton pyjamas separating them are not enough.
“Then just sway a bit. Like this.”

Bucky doesn’t bother knocking on the door to the room Gale’s been holed up in. The door isn’t shut, just cracked and he pushes it open and then immediately closed, cutting off the rest of the infirmary.
He didn’t realize how terrible he’d felt, how the adrenaline and the fear were making his breathe shorter and his chest tighter until he laid his eyes on Gale, propped up on the bed, leaning against the wall, wrapped in the same pile of blankets Benny had been, and blinking owlishly at him. He felt like he’d been existing outside of his body until now, when he snapped back into it and felt like himself again, the sight of Gale righting his world.
“Hey,” the blonde on the bed rasped out.
“Hey?” Bucky put his hands on his hips and looked down at the younger man. “That’s all you’ve got to say?”
“I’m a man of few words,” Gale hit back. “Thought you liked that about me.”
