Oh, how he misses brushing his knuckles lightly on it, how much he misses pulling her close without consciously telling himself that their closeness is nothing but their friendship. It drives him crazy that they can't step on the other side again without opening the wounds that just healed. It's a miracle that they have gone back to how they were before, a couple of best friends who fool around together whenever they find themselves single at the same time. He'll take whatever they have in the present, even if that means using each others' bodies for pleasure and relief for a night but not right now. For the moment, keeping her close means keeping his pain to himself as he drinks on her beauty from afar knowing that another guy has the privilege to be the proud boyfriend.

Each of her senses returns one by one — echoes of birdsong, lush grass and wildflowers cushioning her, their aromas mixing in the air and coaxing her eyes to open despite their slight sensitivity to the light. Her vision at first is a blur of tree bark and branches shedding the last of their blossoms, the sight above her clearing bit by bit until she is able to make out the veins in some of the leaves that hang low on the tree, made translucent under the sunlight.

With a heavy sigh, he tugs the scarf free from his neck and returns it to its rightful place, draping it back around Mikasa. Her complaints are muted, her mouth temporarily hidden underneath the fabric until it settles comfortably over her neck and shoulders. Her cheeks turn rosy and she touches the scarf with only the tips of her fingers like it’s something incredibly fragile, like it hasn’t already been through hell and back a thousand times over. Eren scolds himself for the confusing blend of pride, possessiveness, and affection viciously clawing at his heart at the sight of her wearing his scarf again. She closes her eyes as she not-so-subtly inhales his scent.
He wants to kiss her, to show her how much he’ll miss her even when he’s dead. And what an odd thought that is, since he’s certain there isn’t going to be anything waiting for him when he shuts his eyes for the last time.

The bird seemed to flap just as anxious as Mikasa felt, holding still suddenly in midair while her feet squished against the ground as if there was water in the ground below. Right as Mikasa was about to steady herself correctly, however, the bird almost gave her a look of, “forgive me,” before it yanked her suddenly more toward the tree. Mikasa held out her hands as her balance tripped forward, her other foot falling forcefully with all of her weight as she tried to steady herself.
Unfortunately for her, that weight shift made an audible, “crack” sound, before the ground gave out beneath her and she suddenly fell a very long way down.

SPOILERS: This fic operates under the assumption the reader has either watched the entire anime, read the entire manga, or both.
The day is won. Eren, the Attack Titan, is dead. Armin sees a bright flash of light as he finds himself in a world of sand. He's sent through the Paths until he reaches his old body, back when he was only 10 years old. And he looks up to see the Colossal Titan, Bertholdt's Colossal Titan, right as he was about to break through the wall.
Once Armin can catch his breath he realizes something. This is a second chance. A chance to save an unimaginable number of lives. He has to stop Eren. And, there's only one way to save the world while saving Eren. He must take the Founding Titan himself. He'll eat Grisha Yeager and shoulder the burden of godlike power. He'll save the world, he'll save Paradis, he'll stop the Rumbling before it can happen, and he'll save Eren from himself.
