The water was so shallow as to provide a mostly unobstructed view from above. And the cave roof did let in some light from uneven stones, so there was no real darkness to protect him. The light reflected off the surface of the water and sent blue and yellow reflections back onto the cave walls. “You don’t have to be afraid of me. I’m not gonna hurt you.”
“I am not afraid,” He Xuan hissed, hand tightening to his knife.
Water splashed as the human kicked his feet in the shallows. “So you do speak. I was wondering if you didn’t speak my language, and if I had gone mad thinking you said something to me when you dragged me onto shore.”
He Xuan’s eyes narrowed, tail resting amongst the silt in the cave’s bottom. “If I had known you would stalk me, I wouldn’t have bothered. The world with one less human in it is a better place.”
“Have to agree with you there.” The water splashed, vibrations traveling through as the human kicked his legs. He Xuan swam to the side and peered around the rock. The human’s eye fell on him, but he was hidden enough not to show too much of himself. “You don’t have to keep hiding. I promise I won’t hurt you.”

Summary
The amulet is only supposed to make the emperor fall in love with him. It is not meant to show Kaveh a vision of his former life where he learns his current reality is the plot of a web novel, but it does that, too, somehow.
This revelation allows Kaveh to start fixing all the tragedies that befall the characters in the novel. It allows him to truly connect with others and find companionship where his ignorant counterpart only found loneliness.
But it also makes Kaveh feel terrible when Al-Haitham falls in love with him instead of the heroine, Nilou. It’s all because of the spell, Kaveh repeats to himself, but his traitorous heart starts feeling emotions it most definitely shouldn’t.
But… maybe the curse isn’t what Kaveh thought it was. Maybe, at the end of the day, this could be real.
