He turns his head to see Laffitte’s reaction. The way his smile grows a little wider, eyes wrinkling at the corners with what might be fleeting but genuine amusement before it fades. His eyes as they meet Van Augur’s, one eyebrow lifted.
“Is that right?” he asks.
“I hadn’t noticed.”
“I think,” Laffitte hums, “that you weren’t looking.”
(or: laffitte is curious about his young crewmate. and by "curious", he means that he wants him in the biblical sense. and by "biblical sense", he means that he wants to take his virginity.
so he does.)

Summary
The fact of it is that Beckman loves him, all the way down to his core. He loves him, which is something he never thought he'd say and entirely mean it but here he is, two decades and counting into knowing the man, deeply and undeniably in love with him.
In another life Shanks would have still been his captain, and Beckman his steward. In another still, they could have been something else, but he can't bring himself to think of a universe where the two of them aren't intertwined and connected in any conceivable way.

Crocodile thinking there will be a next time may not be factoring in that Buggy may die here on the floor. Hopefully the newspapers will word it nicely. Something like, ‘After a long battle with his treacherous subordinates, The Emperor, Buggy The Clown, decided his time on this earth was over and died. The world is in mourning as there will never be anyone as amazing and flashy as him.’.
Instead of a more accurate, ‘Clown tickle-fucked to death’.
