“Sorry, Yoshiki,” Hikaru groans as tears come out of one eye and more of him comes out of the other. “Ughh, I don’t – ”
Yoshiki can see how hard he’s trying to calm himself down, but it just isn’t working.
“It’s ok,” Yoshiki says, quiet. “It’s ok. Instead of shovin’ it back inside completely, can you try just...lettin’ it out? Just a little bit?”
He has no clue how any of this works, but maybe a half-measure is better than trying to force it all at once.
“Okay,” Hikaru says, but it sounds like a sob. More of the unknowable, incomprehensible swirl leaks out into the dark room.
“Yoshiki – shit – ‘m sorry but can I…” Hikaru’s face – what’s visible behind the bloom of him – twists in a small kind of agony. “Can I touch you? Not much. Just – ”
It's been years since Hikaru first took the body of Yoshiki's dead best friend. Despite everything - every horror and hurt - they managed to find a home in each other. Not quite friends or family. More and not. What they have is complicated, but precious.
But when Yoshiki escapes their small town – to college, to Tokyo – Hikaru follows. And things start to change for them both.

Summary
Venti should have expected that honoring his former master by taking on a part of his appearance would cause confusion about his true identity amongst all manners of people and creatures who have heard of him. He doesn’t mind being called ‘Barbatos’ so much as he did before he became a full-fledged hunter.
Or so he likes to tell himself, until a particularly long hunt drags out every ounce of self-doubt from the depths of his consciousness and leaves him shaken.
Luckily, Xiao is there to remind him of who he really is.

The word had come quiet and rough from his throat. A nickname. It only intensified Xiao’s previous desire to be held by Venti. 𝘓𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥.
“What–” Xiao shivered as he felt Venti suck a mark onto his neck, then press his tongue against it immediately afterward as if to soothe it. “What does that word mean–”
"𝘋𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨," Venti murmured, now smiling at his throat. “I’m calling you 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨, Xiao.”

“Ah-ha! Not true. Time is the only thing we have.” Venti refuses to let Xiao meet his end so easily. He doesn’t know Xiao, not really. But it’s just so frustrating to see him with freedom right between his fingers and still refuse to hold on. He could if only he tried.
Venti will drag Xiao into tomorrow, even if he has to do it kicking and screaming.
