Not the Tommy and Tubbo story we want, but perhaps the story they need.

    OR:
a clingyduo character study, filled with angst, grief for the undead, guilt from the still living, and a hopeful ending because Prime knows these kids deserve one.

    Summary

Tom drops his eyes and puts on a sharp grin, regarding the offending prankster down the length of his nose rather than deigning to turn his head. “Give me the key.”

The woman laughs, looking up at Kendall, who smirks back at her with that half-lidded look. She looks back to Tom, sneering at him like he’s just shit on her shoe. “Nope. He’s my new pet.”

    Oh, now Greg’s her pet.

    Of course.

    Summary

    “Is he asleep?”

“Who – ?” Tom looks up to see the glance over his shoulder and realizes Karl must mean the long-legged sailor trying to hide behind his back, curled up into his knees on the deck sofa and leaning into Tom like he’s a throw pillow. “Oh, no. He’s just trying to get out of participating.”

Greg shifts near imperceptibly against Tom’s back, nudging him under the ribs with the corner of an evident phone.

Tom gamely restrains the urge to roll his eyes. “But he may be – I’m not paying that much attention to him.”

    Summary

Bernard smiles wider, a particular sort of sweet edge to it while he offers the cup – is that lipgloss? “I also got you a latte –”

Greg reaches out and blocks the path of the cup, then blinks at his own hand in some shock. “Uh... Oat milk.”

Bernard blinks and looks to Greg, mouth pinching, “Sorry, Mr Hirsch? I didn’t – ?”

    “Tom drinks oat milk.”

“Do I?” Tom says, evidently bemused enough that he’s not even going to be mocking about it.

    Summary

Tom mindlessly breaks up the next bite of tasteless steak with a sip of wine. It should be a good steak, at a good table, in a good restaurant with atmosphere low-lit and intimate, but he’s felt detached since he walked in; how must it look, him, worn and exhausted, sat across his young dinner partner, who’s expounding on sugar maple and lacebark pine. He sets the wine back to the table, watches Greg answer a text, and is unaware of how tight his hand might be around the glass, until reality crashes in with a sharp pain in his palm and gasps resounding quietly around the table.

    “Tom!”

Tom blinks rapidly, looking down, finding blood and wine seeping warm and sticky between his fingers, and feels a little lightheaded.

    Summary

“You know what? I think you really do pull this off, Greg,” Tom says, jeering, as he pauses in front of Greg and looks up and down with a smirk at his mouth; altogether, pretty obvious in checking Greg out on the platform. “We could get you a gold tie and a silver shirt, and make you the least convincing Mr Gatsby this side of the river.”

Greg frowns slightly, trying to gather some sparse appreciation of the reference. “…Wouldn’t you be Gatsby?”

Tom narrows his eyes, mouth pinching pale with distaste at the contention.

“I’ve never like, seen it,” Greg admits, hastily, exhaling a weak laugh and recognizing easily that he just stepped on some kind of a landmine. “But he’s the rich one, right?”
