When Crocodile first consumed the Suna Suna no Mi, he had a hard time adapting to the changes the Fruit made upon his body. Turning from flesh and blood to inorganic sand was quite harrowing. He expected that. What he didn't expect was the thirst. However, every scrap of food or drop of water turns like ash in his mouth. Nothing can slake the endless thirst.
That is, until, he is fighting other pirates and blood is spilled before him...

Sengoku’s efforts to console a sobbing, eight-year old Rosinante eventually culminating in a wrapped blanket snug around the boy’s shoulders. This, Rosi later found out, was standard procedure for people in shock.
His brother had embraced him, too. The first time they saw each other as adults. That was a shock of a different kind. Shock, not at Doflamingo’s affection, but at how familiar it seemed even after fourteen years of estrangement. Muscle memory took over, Rosinante’s traitorous arms wrapping themselves around his now-grown brother as if they were still children, all alone in the world that despised them.

Rosi is a man who has always had to learn to be content with what he was given. There seemed so many choiceless choices, so many illusionary open doors throughout his life. Each path, carefully laid out for him, had lead to more… sameness. Everything simply… mediocre. Endurable. He was what he was because others had willed it so.
Now, though, in the cracks he sees forming, widening, day by day with the work of their hands, he sees another future, less gray than what he has always known.
When the sun sets on Dressrosa, he sleeps; he dreams of Mariejois burning, and is satisfied.
