He loves the life they’ve made for themselves. It’s messy and busy – there’s always a cardigan of Henry’s thrown over a chair and a paperback open on the arm of the chair with the spine cracked; Alex’s notes on the dining room table, and three different loyalty cards for the coffee shop down the street on the table by the door because Alex keeps forgetting his in different pockets. His life with Henry is full of laughter and soft touches: David curled up at Alex’s side as he reads through class notes while Henry snaps a photo; Henry's arms around him when he gets in from class; the two of them bartering over whose turn it is to take David out when he needs to go out and it’s raining.
It’s mundane a lot of the time – something Alex never thought he would want – but he loves it.
Or, at least, he loves it when Henry is here.
Which, right now, he isn’t.
He hasn’t been here for five weeks. Which… like, it’s fine. It’s not a whole a thing.

‘Fuck, it’s so weird being back here,’ Alex murmurs, moving through the room. His feet shuffle across dusty hardwood floors and his fingertips skate over the furniture – all still there, exactly how they left it. Alex doesn’t know why they left it like this, like they would be coming back to it soon; why they'd treated moving to DC just like they had when June had left for college and nobody had touched anything in her room because it was still hers. Maybe, deep-down, they’d all been worried they’d be back here in four years. June is twenty-five now, but her room is still upstairs just as she left it on her first day for her senior year at UT; Alex is twenty-two and his is just like he left it when he was eighteen, wide-eyed, with a head full of dreams and a heart full of fire.
