Zhongli looks forlornly at the sea. The sky is colored with tints of pink, hinting at the impending sunset. He isn’t getting any younger, is he? And six thousand does seem rather late to be getting married.
He shouldn’t be taking Cloud Retainer’s words to heart. She was joking. But he can’t help the subtle sorrow that settles in his bones as he looks at the happy families in the harbor. An older couple walks by, the rings on their fingers glinting in the light. A hint of jealousy stabs at his bones. He is at that age, isn’t he?
He stops by a seafood stand on his way home, wrinkling his nose at the smell as the vendor hands him the tentacles. He considers dropping the container and making a run for it, but the thought of spending even more of his days unmarried to Childe makes his heart clench.
Zhongli holds his breath the whole way back. Perhaps good food will put him in Childe’s good graces.

He ignores the foreboding emotion brewing in his chest and picks up his tool again, this time letting the bristles flow on the canvass to render the serpentine body of the dragon, and the dull green gem sitting on the centermost of its upper chest. The harsh lines of its leathery wings follow, their tips attenuating to the whetted margins of its claws.
This is utterly ridiculous. Dragons are supposed to be extinct decades ago, years before he was even born, but the one in his dream is so vivid he's afraid he will wake up one morning to the fangs and drooling maw of the chimeric creature, posed to devour him whole.
Kaveh's dreams are persistently haunted by a creature long known to be extinct.
The Duke Alhaitham decides to make it his problem, too.
