Summary
Being a soldier and being a butler involved the same discipline. Both require an ability to adapt to any situation, any problem. One must understand the importance of rules in order to know when they should be broken. They’re positions that require attention to detail because even just a minor slip will compromise everything they’ve worked toward, making patience a crucial skill.
A soldier and a butler are both called to be of service.
It is a call that Alfred Pennyworth has never missed.
(Previously titled: Kindness can be cruel)
But life didn't start for Alfred when he became a butler. His life began in London.

Summary
"Despite his initial annoyance, Alfred could not help but smile fondly at his boy. His hair was mussed with sleep and his cheeks reddened due to the dry air. He was wearing the soft pajamas that Master Dick bought him last year, the same one Alfred remembered hearing him loudly complain about.
The boy was the splitting image of Master Bruce at that age. "
I'm such a sucker for good grandparent Alfred, even if he wasn't the best parental figure for Bruce growing up. He is such a prime example of flawed parents becoming great grandparents.

Summary
The thoughts didn’t leave him. They stayed, settled in his mind like an itch he couldn’t quite scratch.
With each passing moment, a subtle irritation began to creep in, though it was difficult to place exactly where it was coming from. He moved on to the Batmobile, running a practiced eye over the sleek black surface, but even as his hands worked, he found himself growing impatient. He noticed the scratches, the scuffs, the marks of wear and tear, and they felt... unnecessary. Careless.
Bruce had taken the car out the night before, and had he bothered to clean it afterward? No. Of course not. He never did. He relied on Alfred for that. Alfred always handled the details—the things Bruce never noticed, never thought about.

Summary
He forced himself to chuckle, breaking the tension with his usual humor. "Careful, sir. You’ll have me thinking you actually enjoy my company."
Thomas grinned, a flash of something unspoken in his eyes. "I do, Alfred. More than you know."

At one point, she reached over, her fingers brushing his as she adjusted a vase. Alfred’s hand stilled, though Martha didn’t seem to notice, or perhaps didn’t mind, the contact. She smiled at him, her eyes warm and familiar."Thank you, Alfie," she murmured, her voice soft as she looked up at him. "I don’t know how I’d manage half of this without you." Her fingers lingered over his for a moment longer, and she offered him a warm smile before turning back to the arrangements, as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

"Oh, he has no idea, does he?" one voice said, barely hiding the laughter."None whatsoever," came another. "Poor Mr. Pennyworth. He’s oblivious as a rock."
