“If it is of any comfort,” Aldo tries, “He trusted Thomas to steer the Church through the Conclave. He was sure of his integrity like he was of no one else’s here. And Thomas has complete faith in you. You can be sure of his counsel.”
“I know I can. He’s been a blessing.” At the mention of Thomas, Innocent had brightened, but there is something searching in his expression when he looks back at Aldo, like he hadn’t quite gotten the answer he wanted.

Thomas’ eyes blink open, then fall on Vincent.
“Vincent,” he murmurs blearily, voice hoarse. Then, he seems to register he's in his own apartment, outside of the Vatican. He rockets onto his elbows. “Vincent! What—”
Vincent holds up the apartment key. “I let myself in. I hope you don't mind.”
“Of course not! But—how did you get here?”
“I walked.”
“Through Rome?”
“Well, I didn't walk through Venice.”
