All of Shiratorizawa look up at him from where they sit camped in the hallway, waiting for their coach to wrap up and take them home shrouded in defeat. The bowl cut first year is still crying, making an ugly, mucusy sound with every breath, and he’s not the only one with tear tracks.
Not Ushijima, though. His eyes are still dry, his face infuriatingly blank as he looks up from his seat on the floor.

First, Xie Lian makes sure that his husband is busy. Something like that makes it sound so terrible, but it’s not—it’s really not! It’s just that Hua Cheng can be overprotective, and if he saw this he would react poorly. Xie Lian would rather spare him that.
Second, Xie Lian puts Ruoye away. The poor thing never wants to go. He has to tie it somewhere safe and placate it with gentle touches and soothing words. Even so, it still lashes its ends and strains after him until he leaves the room. It will cling too tightly when he returns.
Third, Xie Lian goes somewhere quiet and familiar. It can be the armory, or their private baths, or even the shrine near Puqi Village. It is never their bedroom. It is never their cottage.
Fourth, Xie Lian draws his sword.
Fifthly, finally, Xie Lian takes a deep breath, closes his eyes, and carves his own skin open.

Summary
When Oikawa Tooru, a science fiction writer who is trying to break into literary fiction, is told that he has to edit a short fiction anthology with his award-winning novelist rival Ushijima Wakatoshi, his world comes crashing down. He can’t imagine having to work with the pretentious Ushijima, who has always made him feel small and worthless in their minimal interactions.
However, circumstance leads to Oikawa having to stay at Ushijima’s farm as they work on the anthology. There, they untangle their differences and Oikawa learns that they have more in common than he previously believed. As he gets to know Ushijima better, he realizes that maybe he can care for Ushijima.
Maybe he can even love him.
